The death penalty is, at a minimum, an absolute deterrent for that one particular murderer. That's the least you can expect. If other,
potential murderers are deterred, then that's just icing on the cake.
Penalties are very rarely deterrents for those who are criminals by nature. Passion crimes cannot be measured or categorized. So saying that the death
penalty is not a deterrent is irrelevant. The purpose of a death penalty is not to deter others, it is to punish the murderer.
