During the worldwide YouTube outage of October 2018, most of us ATSers ran here as fast as we could. For the rest of the population that is unaware (thankfully) of this site, they ran straight to Pornhub!

According to Mashable,

data released by Pornhub, the site saw a wave of additional traffic late Tuesday evening. Traffic surged to 12 percent above normal at around 9 p.m. ET, when the outage was widely reported, climaxing with a 21 percent increase over normal traffic around 10 p.m. ET.
**emphasis mine but I'm sure they simply forgot to put it in there**
mashable.com...
The article went on to say

Traffic dropped precipitously once YouTube's service was restored, dropping to slightly below average numbers around midnight

There you have it, folks...we ATSers have little to worry about when it comes to being inundated by the masses during times of despair and possible global catastrophe. I think we are safe in our lil corner of the internets for the time being!

*Bonus: at the link to the article, they show the list of search terms that increased significantly during the outage. Some are quite funny and others made me wonder if the users forgot they were no longer on YouTube.

Haha, go figure. Sites like Pornhub and YouPorn Have turned into a haven for uploads that YouTube takes down, and not just the pornographic ones. Someone I am subscribed to ended up using YouPorn because his video had an animated "penis". Long story short, he managed to get it repealed and put it back on YT.

I'm still wondering why my YouTube worked fine when others didn't?

Well, Wide-Eyes, I think you already know why and now the rest of us do too. You just outed yourself as a Fed plant! You have been able to keep your cover on ATS under wraps for almost a decade but now it's been blown!

That's too bad because I usually enjoy your thoughts on subjects. Now I'm sad.

And now I'll end with this disclaimer that I don't really think that Wide-Eyes is a Fed.

My YouTube app would only load a small number of videos before showing the error message, sometimes it would only load one.

You say yours was working fine? How remarkably odd.

Interesting, but what I would like to know is how they got to Pornhub, something the people from Pornhub know but did not disclosed.

When I look at the statistics of the sites I manage, one of the things I look at is the referrer (the site that had a link to my site) and the search terms that resulted in a search engine pointing to the site. In this case that would show if people were being diverted to Pornhub by search engines after they searched for something, if they were following a link from other sites or if they went there directly, by writing the site's address or using a bookmark.

Looking at the search terms used in Pornhub makes me think a large part found it through a search engine.

I didn't have a problem either, as it happened while I (and most people in Europe) was sleeping.

VERY interesting point that I had not even thought about! While I have designed a few sites (very few and very small and long ago) I have never actually managed or been all that hands on with them after I finished throwing them together.

Honestly, I just assumed that when The Tube blew up, everyone scratched their heads for awhile, maybe searched for a reason why it went dark but ultimately just decided that their video viewing needs were not being met and neither were their "other" needs and just clicked on their #2 bookmark. Lol!

I seem to remember a story about someone taking their vids to PH after one of the purges. It may have been Alex Jones but that doesn't really sound right. Anyway, if that's the case, then I'm guessing PH has all kinds of content that we wouldn't normally associate with a pron site. Therefore, it is entirely possible that if people fled to their search engines they could've easily ended up there thanks to Google.

Now I wanna know how they ended up there!

So YOU are the one that they make those 55 gallon drums of KY for! I knew that ATS was good for answering the questions that seem unanswerable but I never thought I'd get an answer to that one. Cheers to you!

I just saw a page with your name over there while I was...ummm...doing...uhhh...research. It was trending up, quite a bit. Was wondering if it was your page. Guess not. Lol

ETA I figured I had better check your threads and make sure you wouldn't be offered by my joke. That led me to your first post. Now, the whole "trending up" becomes even funnier since there is a ban on "Up" Hahahahaha

It's kind of pathetic that it made any difference at all...Huge catastrophe in the modern world, You Tube is down for an hour....So the idea is still sit on your butt but move to a different site??? I wonder if anybody got up and went for a walk or read a book or stranger still looked at the stars???
Maybe even a face to face conversation with someone but that might be asking too much.

When it went down, I started a thread and put it in the "Global Meltdown" forum, mainly because I was picturing the rest of the world freaking out. I happened to be a little late on making the post but a few people that did see it understood what I was trying to convey by putting it there. I was responding to someone but it got shut down before I could get it posted but my reply was exactly along those lines.

I said something like "it was so weird, I was outside when I saw the neighbor guy. He's a millennial and I don't think I've seen him in the last 3 years. He just walked out, looked around like he was lost or had lost something. I couldn't help but watch what he was doing because I could tell something was wrong. After he looked around for a minute or two looking for some sign of life, he then turned to the sky. He just stared straight up. His pale white skin almost glowed in the moonlight. I dunno what was going through his mind. I'm not sure if he was witnessing the alien invasion or if he was having a "coming to God" moment. Either way, I figured I had better head inside and check the news. First I looked here and nothing out of the ordinary was going on. I checked a couple of my other go to pages. Nothing. I headed back outside, phone in hand, and now the neighbor had his phone AND tablet out. Something HUGE was going on!! I decided to see what YouTube was saying and it was down. Were the Chinese or Russians invading? Did the aliens actually land somewhere? Why is YouTube down? Who pulled the plug? I started searching and found a page with little info other than YouTube was down. Eventually I found another article. I rushed back to ATS, did a quick scroll down the new threads and didn't see anything. I typed up something real quick and posted. It was then that I saw the other post. So I decided to go talk to my ghostly looking neighbor and attempt to reassure him that everything would be ok. But he was gone. As quickly as he had appeared, he had disappeared just as quick. I haven't seen him since that night. I probably won't see him until the next global catastrophe but I do know that he is still alive and I feel good about that."

I know it's a long, ridiculous story but that's how I remember it happening. I figured if he was experiencing life that way without YouTube, there would be many, many others that would feel the same anxiety as he did. It opened my eyes even wider than they already are. Humanity has very little chance of survival if things continue down the road we've been on for the last 20-25 years. I hope I'm wrong.

Imagine Internet service-provider censorship becomes so bad one day that the only way to still have opposing views and political debate is by hiding it in porn movies.

Before people think I'm being "dirty", consider it ... it may not be that far off.

Is this porn movie "alt-right"?
Oh ja!
But prove it - it could just be sexual liberationists talking adult stuff.

Pornhub - the last bastion of free moaning and groaning.

Not that I think porn is politically neutral in content at the moment anyway, but those are issues I can't discuss here.
