On World day of Animals celebrate Drosophila, first Gaian launched into Space!

This week on October the 4th it was celebrated the World day of Animals and many interesting facts about other alive animated species of earth were commented and discussed.

One case in particular has attracted my attention for the so important Historic implications.

We all know the incredible contribution that animals have done to civilization, there were multiple species domesticated since the end of Neolithic times that have given to us companion, physical work, partnership in hunting and unfortunately also feeding humanity with their own sacrifice.

It is also meaningful the enormeous quote of sacrifice of animals used in laboratories for testing since about 200 hundred years ago in diverse experiments that have pushed the advance of science.

In the same tradition of testing new technologies one of the few privileges civilization has given to animals is also being used as the first travelers to the outer space preceding any human being, although it was not precisely to honor them.

Do you know who was the very first alive being from this planet to cross the atmosphere in a suborbital flight?

It was not the first Astronaut or Cosmonaut and not the so famous Rhesus Monkey sent in surobital flight on 1949 nor the Dog Laika in 1958 who certainly was the first animal in orbit, as it was possibly taught to many of us in our school years, but certainly a nuch smaller creature became long before that the first going out of our world.

On February 2Oth of 1947 in White Sands, New Mexico, using a Nazi German V2 Rocket Captured from Pinamunde on WWII in a container a colony of humble drosophila fruit flies that became the first living creatures that abandoned the atmosphere and after their unusual parabolic trip came back safely using a parachute.

First Animal sent to space ever

Those fruit flies if we don't count the so called trip of the Prophet Elijah on a chariot of fire to heaven described in the Bible should be also the first Gaians to go out of the atmosphere.

Fruit flies were already famous for science long time before that though since were the specie used to develop the fundamental laws of the theoretical framework of Genetics by the Austrian scientist and priest Gregor Johann Mendel since 1865.

Great OP I prefer the term earthlings to Gaian though, because this is how we treat animals we owe so much too. I’m sometimes convinced that we are in fact the aliens.

First Earthlings or Gaians it was fair, really just and necessary to remember with respect the interesting drosophilas, guests many times rejected from our kitchens, since they were the ones opening the space exploration era about 71 years ago.

I was unable to find a mention of it here in ATS before. I am wondering if to have been really Swastiknauts have something to do with it?

Coincidentially their historic flight from New Mexico to outer space reaching 108 kms of altitude can be remembered this week since world day of Animals is almost in the 76 anniversary of the first successful parabolic suborbital launching of a V2 , occurred in October 3th of 1942, the real starting point of the Space exploration era.

It is also important to mention that with the research in Austria at XIX century by Mendel of drosophilas reproduction they became in this way second time involved in major History of science event, since that leaded to the gradual discovery of the Earth's Genoma, another major milistone of our civilization through which all alive beings of this planet are linked in brotherhood.

By the way, drosophilas didn't stop at that point their space career, ironically they were the only Swastiknauts but also that became Astronauts and Cosmonauts, since the Wine flies are among the first Earthlings arriving to another world, as part of the alive pay load of the Soviet Space craft Zond 5 to the moon, another milistone shared with other animals, two tortoises, celebrated on mid September in its 5O anniversary.
