Interesting! I know that Amber Alerts, show up on highway information displays....between informing us of seatbelt fines and traffic fatalities due to drunk driving I mean...

I also see beaucoup cameras, sensors, rfid readers, and various other anrennae-type devices on every freeway. I don't know how long it takes to squirt a message. But I bet it's well under a second.

Good question.

Your phone should still connect to towers in the area even with out a SIM card.

Take the SIM out and dial 911, it should go through.

It doesn't surprise me that the Amber alert went through, it's probably tied into the same requirement that allows SOS calls to be accepted regrdless of carrier (which is determined by SIM card)

If it says "No Service", you are probably SOL, though.

Why anyone would think any device is ever actually off, is kind of mystifying to me. Batteries aside, RFID tags require no power source to be read.

Phones as recently as the iPhone 3G used to turn off the radios when you told them to in setting. It's pretty easy to see with the right equipment. The last time I experimented with the 3G, I used a sniffer probe and a spectum analyzer and you could see the carrier drop out.

I haven't verified with any onther phones for a long time so I have no idea about anything current. never thought to even though the equipment is sitting right there. I uess as I've maturred in my career, I'm a little less curious (and busy).

You'd be surprised how much info you can squeeze into a short burst. We used to have radios buried all over Afganistan that just patiently sat there listening and recording. At a predesignated time they would burst transmit to satellite and back to the states for analysis. The short burst uplink was to reduce the chances of anyone dialing in on the location, although I'm not sure the peeps over there had the tech to do that anyway.
