I hate the fact that the presser was so light on details... that is one of Trump's weaknesses IMO. But I did hear a few things I liked: Mexico has agreed to work with us on border control! Also, the requirement that complaints had to go before an international committee looks like it will be scaled back. Mexico has pledged to immediately start buying more agricultural products.

I did notice how adamant Mexico was about getting Canada on board. I can understand that, as Mexico-Canada trade is important to them as well. It sounds to me overall that Mexico is looking to go in a new direction that should bring them into a better place economically and socially.

Hopefully we'll see more details in the days to come.

This, folks, is what's really important. Not Twitter. Not legalities. Not hyperbole.

That's what they said 20 years ago.

It was wrong back then, too.

Canada will come to the table quickly. Their economy is far too dependent on the United States for them to risk tariffs.

As a bonus, perhaps this will be the final nail in the coffin for Justin "Soy Boy" Trudeau's political career?

This is progress. Hopefully a good , fair deal for all parties.

It sounds like the major stumbling block was automotive and that looks to be solved in the Trump Admins direction.

Trump keeps following through on his campaign pledges.....how dare a politician do that.

"NAFTA" is terminated. The new US Mexico trade deal sounds like ANOTHER campaign promise kept.

I remember when NAFTA was enacted, Ross Perot made his famous comment that "There will be a giant sucking sound of jobs going to Mexico." He was widely mocked for it in the media. But of course that's exactly what happened.

They better open a goddamn Pepsi Plant in Puerto Rico, lord knows they need some damn jobs. Is it really that difficult to demand manufacturers move to PR??? Give our fellow Americans a few better opportunities other than dope, EBT, and reduced taxes.

If I see anymore #ing glass Pepsi bottles with real cane sugar made in Mexico I will have a #ing fit! Like, are we too stupid to put real cane sugar in a glass bottle or something??? Does that capability allude the executives like a forgotten legacy or myth?

If true, this is an excellent way to approach the overall issues: the disparages in trade, the Mexican poverty that is driving illegal immigration, and the loss of American jobs to Mexican plants. By requiring a higher wage in order to trade with the US, companies in Mexico will be forced onto a leveler playing field that allows America to compete. In addition, the plants that do relocate to Mexico will stimulate their local economy and help bring the country out of poverty.

I still want to hear the official announcement, but it sounds like a win-win all around. Now to Canada...

But truly most of the illegals going into your country come from latin America, not Mexico, as far as i know at least. I don't know well but i think if Mexico/USA/Canada get better the rest of those countries from central America and below will not feel nice about it and will continue to send more people over the North America border (Mexico). Who knows but i know people in some of the south America and i can tell that they would feel like that. They have it very bad and may not feel ok with being left out even more

Mexico is in a bad place not because of not being able to do better but because of corruption of politicians, everyone knows it and no one would do anything, maybe this time they will grow bigger and richer, instead of sending all the money to foreign banks.

I don't think the real deals will be announced, there is a lot going on behind the curtains or whatever, I feel like some of the top politicians in Mexico will suddenly lose the protection they had for decades and new ones will take place. I don't think this is a very honest thing because you don't just remove corruption from one month to another as if it was a magical thing, the roots go back to 100 years or more, in both sides. Those families won't just suddenly go away

Edited to add, i have friends in Mexico and this opinion is based on how they have told me things are going now and how they see it. I am in Mexico now since about 2 weeks ago on vacation but planning to stay for a bit but my friends i know since about 10 years ago, almost 11 now. I don't know much to be honest but i feel from what people talk daily that this is a very general feeling, overall

That's a good point that I guess I overlooked in my joy at hearing the news. Of course, Trump also stated that Mexico would be working with us on the immigration problem, so maybe they can stem that flow as well.

Absolutely, but I suspect it's more than just a desire to be corrupt. Once corruption has a foothold, it can become dangerous to not participate... that is the danger facing US politics. It is the difference between having a choice of whether to take the drug money or not, and of having a choice to either take the drug money and live or refuse it and die.

Nothing will change in that respect overnight, agreed. It may well take years. But if one is thinking, "it'll be 20 years before the corruption is rooted out if we start today," I respond with, "how long will it take if we don't start today?"

Yes, but what I'm the thinking is, this deal or deals are not being made between the current US government and the incoming MX gov, this is being signed between current US and the current MX govs. Which means this is being agreed by the corrupt mx gov that is going to be thrown out end of year. So how good can it be? Are they agreeing to things that will save their asses and their families richness and position?

I don't think the incoming MX gov has any way to control this, they will be delivered whatever the corrupt guys agreed to their own benefit, they will be thrown out, what could they care anyway?

That's why I don't think this will turn out good, but who knows

According to the press conference, both the present government and the incoming government were involved with the negotiations. Whether or not that is true, and how true it is, are yet to be known, but both Trump and the Mexican President (whose name I can't immediately recall for some reason) went out of their way several times to drive home that point.
