He was also qualified on towing and other things on the aircraft. And yes, you start engines in the simulations. As for steering, if it uses a steering tiller it's a handle down by the pilots leg. It's just like steering a car.

With the checklist that tells you what to do and in exactly which order. I had my mechanic's license for over 20 years. You don't do a thing to an aircraft without the proper manual in hand. If I have the manual or the checklist there isn't a plane that I couldn't start.

And the checklists are usually kept sitting in the cockpit if they're paper copies, or are pulled up on an MFD if they're electronic.

This guy started the engines and backed out to line up on the taxiway.
Then he took off without permission.
Put on a great aerobatic show.
Then intentionally plowed the plane into the ground away from the public.

Just goes to show you don't much experience to crash a plane into a target.

Plus there are videos online on how to startup and configure the dash 8.

The non believers should try a demo flight at their local airport.
They would be very surprised how easy it is to fly.
