Rashida Tlaib, With Primary Win, Is Poised to Become First Muslim Woman in Congress

DETROIT — By the time Rashida Tlaib was finished, not a dry eye remained in the room.

“I want people across the country to know that you don’t need to sell out,” Ms. Tlaib said early Wednesday morning. “You don’t have to change who you are to run for office — and that is what this country is about.”

Ms. Tlaib is poised to become the first Muslim woman ever elected to Congress, after she narrowly defeated Brenda Jones, Detroit’s City Council president, in a Democratic primary race to succeed longtime Representative John Conyers Jr. in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. She will run unopposed in November. In a separate Democratic primary contest for a special election to serve the remaining months of Mr. Conyers’s term, Ms. Jones prevailed over Ms. Tlaib on Wednesday afternoon, according to The Associated Press.

It looks like Congress is set to have their first Muslim, female, member come November. Tlaib faced off against Brenda Jones in the Democratic primary for John Conyers soon to be vacant House of Representatives seat. Currently the Republicans have not fielded a candidate for the seat so it looks like Tlaib will be running uncontested in November, guaranteeing her election.

While the media is focusing on the fact that Tlaib is female and Muslim there is another story that is being largely ignored. Tlaib is a follower of Bernie Sanders and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. This now marks their second big win in the past few weeks.

While the DSA may not have fared as well as some may have expected yesterday this is still a significant victory for them.

So ATS what are your thoughts about this Muslim socialist that heckled Trump in 2016 being elected to Congress?

I think the left should have all socialists elected, so they can be seen for what they truly are. Then we can stop playing this game of calling it something other than what it is. Oh, and Viva Venezuela!

Good luck with the socialist plans because those policies don't have a snowballs chance in hell of working in action. The USA turned into a Mad Max world is the end result. I don't give a frak what religion she worships. She had better put the American Laws and the Constitution FIRST before her petty religious beliefs

I could give a R.A. about her identity, or the identity politics sure to follow. But "democratic socialism" is the harbinger of a ruined America.

Probably because it has been co-opted by a number of alt-Right extremist groups. The neo-Nazis and white supremacists love the Libertarians because they always defend their right to spout hate.

But isn't that the point? We have free speech for a reason... Everyone else that isn't Libertarian are trying to censor and regulate hate speech.

Everyone has forgotten that free speech has consequances like everything else in life. People should learn to grow up and ignore the stupidity of others instead of forcing someone else to do something they don't like to make you feel happy.

“A lot of my strength comes from being Palestinian,” she said at one point. Ms. Tlaib’s mother draped her in the Palestinian flag as she spoke.

“I will fight back against every racist and oppressive structure that needs to be dismantled,” Ms. Tlaib said. “You deserve better than what we have today with our president.”

This country deserves better than those that draw 'strength' from foreign 'states' that didn't exist during the Ottoman Empire.
