The Australian government continues to show support for the War on Terrorism by announcing a troop level increase in support of Iraq.

This increase fails to offset the overall loss of troops from a former supporter, the Netherlands.

Australia is planning to send an additional 450 troops to Iraq, Prime Minister John Howard has said.

He said the new soldiers will provide security for Japanese engineers working in southern Iraq and support efforts towards rebuilding the country.

The Australian soldiers will help replace troops from the Netherlands, who are due to withdraw 1,400 soldiers from southern Iraq after their government decided against renewing their mission.

Australia has shown determination and commitment to taking a stance in the global war on terror.

It is unfortunate to see other nations like the Netherlands abandon this effort, as the success of this endeavor will aid long term regional stabillity for the mid east.

When the going gets tough you find out who your friends are. A lot of people might not agree with why we went to Iraq in the first place. But that
is a mute point now. We are there, American soldiers are dying. No matter what Saddams intent or capablities where, we are now fighting insurgents(terrorists) in Afganistan and Iraq. Better there than here! We have dealt the terrorist a huge blow by taking the fight to them. Something they believe we did not have the stomach for. There has not been a terrorist attack in the USA since 9/11. France, Germany, Russia and Canada are not our allies. The sooner we realize this the better off we will be. It takes a small gutsy nation like the Aussies to step up to the plate. The amount of troops they are sending is not enough to affect the final outcome, but it is a mighty large symbol of support.
