You are absolutely correct and when I applied for a gun permit I simply checked off 'no history of mental illness' and that was that, there was no follow up, no checking to see if that was indeed a fact, unless they contacted my doctor to confirm, but she never mentioned anything to me and she is very thorough about everything.

They check it against NICS. If you've been adjudicated mentally ill, it's supposed to be loaded into NICS, and if it was you would get flagged and you'd be denied.

Believe it or not this is a rap beef. This has been unfolding for a while but the breaking point was when they killed smoke dawg on Canada day and they have been taking turns shooting up blocks ever since (more than the usual as it's quite common).
The source said there is reason to believe that the gunman, Faisal Hussain, 29, might have obtained the firearm used in the attack from his older brother, who is in a coma in hospital.
