Another B-1 emergency landing

B-1 emergency landing at Hickam
"A B-1 Lancer experienced an in-flight emergency shortly after takeoff June 1 and had to quickly land, the Air Force confirmed Monday."
This happened on the 1st, and we're just hearing about it now. Makes me wonder if there will be any other incidents that come to light in the few days/weeks...

When the ejection seat malfunctioned, and froze the crew member inside the bomber, they then had to make an emergency landing. Whatever else, this saved us Taxpayers a multi million dollar aircraft. Plus it quickly showed the A.F. mechanics, exactly what failed in flight. So they grounded all of the Lancers and are working out a fix, as fast as they can.

Well that's what got printed in the newspapers, anyway. I have to wonder if the A.F. is suddenly installing some new Buck Rogers weapon system in all of our Lancer Bombers, in order to really go "pig sticking" up and down the Korean Peninsula.

No. The B-1 has always been extremely maintenance heavy. One night we had five on our ramp with engine problems. One had been left behind when the unit returned home for the holidays, four diverted. The ones that diverted took chunks of ice through the engine, because at the time they didn't have enough electrical power to run all their deicing systems and navigation systems, so were having to choose between them.

A friend of mine posted about this one after it happened. I think he said it was an engine problem on takeoff.

I was talking to the other half about this one, and she brought up something I had told her before. You guys just don't know how often we had a jet come in, and the conversation go something like this:

"What's your status?"

"Code 3 for X."

"OK. When in the flight did it fail?"

"Three days ago at our last station."

Or, they'd be borderline Code 2/3, and say they had to fix it before they left. After a few days of troubleshooting and not finding anything, with them running out of money:

"You know what, we talked to our home station, and they want us back, so we'll just take the jet as is and they'll fix it at home."

That's funny. I just watched one of my favorite 1980's movies on BBC American. Real Genius.

They mounted a 5 megawatt laser in the bay of a B1 Bomber.

Even though the technology has changed a lot from 1985, it's still a funny movie.

I'd love to see them try that just to see the electrical system laugh itself into hysterics and then tie itself in knots.

Regardless of current bad press the B1 is a beautiful craft .....

They make great static display aircraft and paperweights too.
