Vatican to announce St. Paul's tomb found

Vatican archeologists are preparing to announced they have positively identified the tomb of St. Paul the apostle.

Giorgio Filippi, a specialist with the Vatican Museums, said a sarcophagus that might still contain the apostle's remains was identified in the basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, reported Catholic World News.

The independent Catholic news service said the sarcophagus was discovered during excavations in 2002 and 2003 around the basilica in south Rome.

Vatican experts soon will make a public announcement of their discovery, Catholic World News said.

"The tomb that we discovered is the one that the popes and the Emperor Theodosius [A.D. 379- 395] saved and presented to the whole world as being the tomb of the apostle," Filippi said.

Sarcophagus could contain remains of apostle

Thanks,

I didn't know and to think that they have that? What about Peter? I would think the Catholics know where he is buried also.

Now the conspiracy theorists in here will be looking for the grave of Christ...........but of course its empty.

Now, they have found a cave in Israel, which is believed to be the tomb of Christ, the one he was put in after he was taken down from the cross.

I believe the Vatican is pursuing a selective timed agenda, to which the offical discovery of St. Paul's tomb will be released. First, Pope John II will most likely pass, a new Pontiff will be named and the discovery of St. Paul's tomb will follow shortly.

This will increase renown interest and attention in the Catholic faith.

Here is the Catholic World News article on it.

It would be an intersting vindication of gospel stories, since there are questions as to who exactly existed back then and where they died and were raised. Paul dying in rome would be an intersting confirmation, and having it on the site of a Catholic Basilica would certianly be good PR for the RCC.

They say they won't open it, I'd like to see them do that tho and perform genetic tests on the body in there. It would be interesting to know something about the genetics of any of the apostles, not that there'd be any reason to think that there'd be anything ususual about them. I'd like to see if this bodies information matches with the expected population of tarsus and turkey at the time.

Paul is intersting of course because he's the only apostle who had nothign to do with the actual jesus ministry, having only ever 'met' christ in an ecstatic vision.

The people who built that altar knew paul was buried there, not the RCC. The RCC didn't even exist during the apostolic period, no modern church did.
This is information that was lost and has been recovered.

www.newadvent.org...
Tomb of St. Peter and also St Paul.

It also notes that the site talked about know is where the apostle Paul is supposed to be buried. Whats different now is that the actual sarcophagus has been discovered.

When was this? They can't possibly ID any crypt as belong to an obscure jewish zealot.

If this is true then it will definitely be an interesting story.
I read 'Angels & Demons' a few months ago and remember that the story had St Peter's tomb in a massive underground catacombs (more like a cavern) under the Vatican. It made me wonder about the possibility of other apostles also being around that area, and lo and behold, now this thread comes to light.

What difference should that make?

Is that the only 'evidence'? Who is 'they'? Where is the evidence currently? Why were they taking pictures of that cave, and who says its the face of jesus?

Peter and Pauls traditional remains were moved from the current repositiories to a temporary one during some part of the persecution, perhaps thats the catacombs story. But its already tradtional that the two of them died and were buried in rome, indeed, its St Pauls basilica, its allways supposed to have had his remains in it. This current finding is that they foudn the actula sarcophagus.

In the beginning, St. Paul was once known as Saul of Tarsus, an Anatolian Mithraist. Much of the very beginning of Christianity's history is attributed to St. Paul's (Saul's) effort to Hellenize the Christian faith from the strict Judaic strain of Rabbi Jesus' faith (in which a follower must first convert to Judaism to embrace and follow Jesus' teachings as a non-Jewish Gentile). St. Paul made it easy for non-Jewish folks to convert to the Christian faith without necessarily having to convert to Judaism.

There are two Christian faiths: the orthodox Judaic-based Christianity, which is now known as the Eastern/Greek Orthodox Christianity; and the conventional Pauline-based Christianity which is now known as the Latin/Roman Catholic Christianity. Mithraism, an enigmatic oriental religion originated from India and Persia, have deep influences on Christianity, some of its beliefs were gradually blended into the Roman Christian strain over the times.

What supports that idea? I have not heard it before.

Good point. In fact there is some evidence to suggest that Da Vinci may have faked the "shroud of turin" using mirrors, chemicals, and a model. There is also an uncanny facial resemblence between the "image" on the shroud & Da Vinci's self-portrait.

I think you are referring to St. Peter, who is allegedly buried directly beneath the main altar in St. Peter's Basilica, where several popes are buried.
