My take is someone is doing an experiment- either marketing, or government, and then targeted stuff will make sure that you, and ONLY you will get 'a clear message', while others will hear something utterly different. Sounds familiar, don't it?

Dude, you're overthinking this, it's pitch interpretation. I hear Laurel. BUT, if I do the following steps on my (Windows) computer:

Go to the speaker icon n your taskbar.
Right click it.
Click on Playback Devices
See your audio info. Click on the whatever you're using for audio.
Now go to the bottom right where it says "Properties" and click that.
A tab called Speakers Properties or similar should open.
Click the tab labeled "Enhancements".
Scroll down to the option called "Pitch".
Look at the Pitch settings, They're likely set to 0.
Set it to +4 and play the video. Hear Laurel.
Set it to -4 and play the video. Hear Yanny

Or in my case, hear Yummy.

That's it. It's not some boogieman scheme, it's just pitch interpretation based on your own ears. Not all ears are made the same for cripe's sake, different people hear differently.

I listened to this 5 times.

At first I heard Laurel x3

Then I heard Yanni

Second time I heard Yanni x3

Third time I heard

Yanni x1 then Yanni combined with laurel like it was being sucked into the borg and both words were being meshed together.

Third and Fourth time was the same.

I heard both but they were like sucked into each other making a new word.

Crazy!

Yup. I'm over thinking it. I also fiddled with noise reduction, and the pitch- and once you filter it, you get 'Laurel'. Someone recorded 'yanny' at a lower level on the recording. It's slight, and almost breathy, but it's there. This is probably a 'no sh- Sherlock' thing, but the sound is synthesized. It's the same as a parlor trick. Once you get the trick, it's just that.

I'd rather overthink, over mangle, and over do it, than be left grasping at shadows- especially in this world.

Used Google Voice Search, and ran it a few times so it'd get the hang of hearing and translating it (I don't use the app, so it's untrained). It kept recognizing it as laurel after about 10- 12 runs.

I have listened to this multiple times and the first couple of times I hear Yaurel, by the third or fourth time I hear Laurel.

I also suspect mental manipulation. I am hearing what I see.

I ran the original till I was blue in the face, and all I heard was 'laurel'. I also discovered my range of hearing is nuts- super and subsonic ranges.

My ability to be mentally manipulated is burned out. I built up a hell of an immunity thanks to people who should not be named, but should merrily burn in hell for all eternity. So, I'm good at picking up on that angle *real* well.

At first i only heard Laurel. Then as i messed with the slider i started to hear yanny, then began to hear laurel where yanny should have been, and vice versa. Sometimes i could almost hear both at the same time. Weird.
