Debate...on ATS

Interesting perspective. Actually, interesting perspectives all around on this thread.

We've seen misunderstanding (which even I've apparently been guilty of here), we've seen misinterpretation and we've seen combinations of both as a result of completely different perspectives...none "wrong". We've seen one thing mean one thing to one person, and something completely different to another.

For my part, I've learned something. I too am passionate about certain subjects, sometimes perhaps too much so. Sometimes too quick on the enter key as well I suppose. I do react (maybe a bit to harshly sometimes) when someone posts something so far across the other end of the spectrum from the discussion that it seems intentionally aimed at drawing fire.

Going forward I will try to be more mindful of these things.

I think it's based on a dare or desperation ... or both. Desperation when you're starving and there is nothing else to eat. A dare when there is plenty of better stuff but you had to eat it before so you need to con others into eating it so you don't feel so bad about having had to.

Not always. Sometimes, one simply shouts down the opposition and wins.

We used to have a debate forum here, Fight Club... I don't know if it's still a thing anymore, as I'm only here more sporadically these days. Poll determines the winner.

A real fun exercise, take the OPPOSITE viewpoint you hold in a debate, and try to win your argument. No better way to increase your debate skills than this.

While name-calling, etc. isn't really in decorum in a debate environment, since it IS used in real life, I generally prefer to not just rule it out. I don't use it myself, so allowing it only makes my side stronger....

Besides, it's more fun to have them flee the discussion after a well-articulated assault on their position, when all they could do is insult you as a person.

I tend to use ats as a way to simply post info and simple opinions attempting to argue or debate seriously here is like trying to make a black and white printer print in color.

I tend to gravitate towards other members with the same mantra and etiquette as me who also pass along info and simple opinions it tends to prevent arguments and when people use the passive info to argue over well, you should recognize their intentions not only that their intellect, intelligence, and mental age.
