Arnaud Beltrame: French Police Hero who Acted Beyond the Call of Duty

In a world of faux heroes I think it important we recognise a real hero when we see one , Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame died in a selfless act of bravery after substituting himself for a member of the public being held hostage , he gave his own life so they could keep theirs.

He must have known the odds were against him but he put duty before personal safety , a sad day made more sad by his loss.

The perp was killed after a 3 hour standoff.

Here's a bit more about the hero as I don't think the terrorist is worth any more of our words in here;

Col Beltrame was a highly-regarded member of the Gendarmerie Nationale and was described by France's president on Saturday as someone who "fought until the end and never gave up".

He graduated in 1999 from France's leading military academy in Saint Cyr and in 2003 became one of just a handful of candidates chosen to join the gendarmerie's elite security response group GSIGN.

He was deployed to Iraq in 2005 and was later awarded the Cross for Military Valour for his peacekeeping work. On his return to France, Col Beltrame joined the country's Republican Guard and was tasked with protecting the presidential palace.

In 2017, he was named deputy chief of the Gendarmerie Nationale in the French region of Aude, home to the medieval town of Carcassonne.

This is what policemen are supposed to do. It is what, in times of crisis and danger to the public, they are meant to do. Their job, in extremis, is to lay down their lives if necessary, to protect the lives of citizens, to uphold the law, to do right when everyone else is doing wrong.

It is not to fire first and ask questions later. It is not to get home at the end of the shift. It is to accept that the real purpose of an enforcer of the law, when things are really rough, is to make sure that if you do not come home from shift on a given day, its because you died doing right, saving lives, being between the threat and the public.

No greater love in the world exists, than the love which causes a person to lay down their life for a friend... save for the love which induces a person to lay down their life for a stranger. May he rest in the sweetest peace, and be remembered for his bravery.

If we have an officer like him in Florida, then the Parkland shooting would have never happened. RIP man.
