All true. But Basquiat was an undiscovered formula -- like a great recipe. He got there first -- with the naive technique, the textual elements, and the extremely bold use of color and line. That particular mix was original and inspired. But of course, many others could have done the same, could still do the same -- but not originally

One thing Basquiat has going for him is, he wasn't pretentious himself.

I got it. But seriously, sometimes kids really can paint better than adults. I had one like that -- just give him the right materials. I had several offers to show his work -- but no car, and no time, plus Junior had other ideas for creativity. And then he ended up...boo hoo...playing the violin instead. Less mess and fuss for his mother, more socially acceptable than being a visionary artist.
