Barbara Streisand Had Her Beloved Dog Cloned

She had her dog Samantha cloned and she now has 2 clones, named Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett. I had no idea that dogs and cats could now be cloned. I looked into it and it's 25,000 for a cloned cat. 50,000 for a cloned dog.

For an interview with Variety for this week’s cover story, Barbra Streisand had a caption suggestion. She wanted a portrait taken at her Malibu estate with her three dogs to be called “Send in the Clones.” This wasn’t just a clever turn of phrase. Streisand revealed that two of her dogs, Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett, were cloned from her 14-year-old Coton du Tulear Samantha, who died in 2017. Before Samantha died, Streisand had cells taken from her mouth and stomach. “They have different personalities,” Streisand says. “I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have her [Samantha’s] brown eyes and seriousness.”

It's fascinating to me that your pet can now be cloned. How many people would clone their pets if it was more affordable. Most, i'm guessing. The problem this would create however, is less animals being adopted and more homeless.

Yes, not only is it that expensive to do, but it's not like you're even getting a copy of your cat or dog.

If I recall correctly, a spotted cat, for example, won't even have the same spots despite having the same DNA.

As long as she doesn't clone herself, I'm cool with it.

How many people would clone their pets if it was more affordable.

I wouldn’t clone my cat . I wouldn’t expect it to be the same. I’m more about their personality. He’s a good cat, listens and does amazing things. Has the most beautiful silky fur. I often think things like if I got another cat I hope it would be like him, but I just don’t think it’s realistic to expect the same behaviour and personality and silky coat.

He’s one in a million and should remain that way

Besides that, the price is outrageous!

I would totally clone our current dog Bella. She is the light of my life! Also, we got her at 3 years old. Would be interesting to raise her from a pup.

Would have been money better spent, in my opinion, but whatever.

I guess if people want to clone pets, and are willing to spend that kind of money on it, they should be able to do so. I guess. I suppose it's no different that cloning Dolly the sheep, if you get right down to it.

Something about it seems to creep me out, though.

My son asked me 2 days ago if i would have any of our pets cloned if i could.I said no,i grieve and remember them,then one must let other animals into one's life.I have thought about it sometimes through the years,about this matter,but to me it feels disrespectful for some reason.However each to their own,i dont condemn those who would do it.

I like the different pets I've had with their different personalities.

And as for dogs... FFS, they are not kids! They are domesticated pieces of meat with pack mentality that humans mistake for loyalty. They stink, they cover our communities with # and they are owned by irresponsible nuggets who walk them without a lead, tempting fate.

I would absolutely clone my favorite cat if I knew the cancer gene could be shut off & I wouldn't have to euthanize her again for it at such a young age (barely 7... )
Also if the stark white, shorthair coat and heterochromia were assured to be expressed. I realize they'd be two totally different personalities, but I'd be fine with that, it's a twin (in a way) that you're getting, not a carbon copy from SciFi land.
C was not taken care of properly as a kitten before I got her from a friend, shut in a room all day & night consistently separated from the humans of that household, ignored & fed a literal fast food chicken diet, so she was really squirrely/goofy & desperate to be liked and quite small -- she maxed at 5 pounds as an adult, due to very stunted growth as a kitten. So I know realistically, a clone would likely not have that dopey desperation to be liked molding their personality, and would probably be a larger cat, too.

The visual homage to C in appearance would give me some very belated closure, however, to a rough & abrupt end to her life from a quick-spreading cancer. 2 weeks from detection to deathbed was my window of time to deal, It'd be a "do-over" in a way to say good bye to C the way I wasn't prepared to, and a fresh start with a new furry friend.

Most irresponsible pet owners probably would.


Not really irresponsible, thoughtless would be a better word but thoughtless when being responsible for another life is irresponsible.


If you think about it, the state in which pet ownership or the pet industry is in it would be really shame If was to ever clone my pet when there are so many animals out there that need love and care that are being mistreated and in line for being put down because there just isn't a place for them.

But there is place for cloned pets.

Just thinking about all the shelters that take in animals and those with money to make a change to many animals would rather clone one they have already had.

reading some of the replies,

I don't mean to judge your personal preferences an I understand it would be done so because of the love you had for your companion and maybe the pain you suffered from the loss due to illness which cloning with possible gene replacement to make sure there is no cancer, I get it but I also realize the selfishness in making that choice if I could due to the knowledge of what happens to all the animals that don't have a human to love and care for them.


I believe in fate and destiny,


the time spent with a loved one be it human or animal should be cherished and have a deeper meaning.


Cloning makes it less real, manufactured, trying to get something back that should be let go.

even though I wouldn't put it past me for doing the same depending on what I went through with the pet.

But not being a situation where I am so emotionally involved in making the decision I think cloning a pet is wrong simply due to high numbers of domesticated animals being put down or mistreated.
