Not sure if I'm comparing apples to pears, but I thought the worst massacre on US soil was the killing of about 300 Native American men, woman and children by the 7th cavalry at Wounded Knee in 1890.
And I suppose one could add, sparked by events during a massive disarmament campaign.

If he had chosen to use an AR-15 instead, he would likely not have been able to kill as many people, as he did with his explosives.
