His parents were older and from what I have read he had a normal childhood although he was a problem. His adoptive father(since birth) died in 05. The mother must 3 months ago. He was now living with a friends father. Something seems to have snapped about a year ago and the mom probably did not really notice. She was in her late 60's. Then she passes and I bet there is no one to make sure he is on his meds anymore and...SNAP. He is alone and decided to make others alone.

Sad stuff. 17 kids dead because he did not just eat the barrel. Hate to put it like that but it is true. Now he will be a ward of the state till executed at a cost of quite a bit per year.

Reckon the FBI got to him a long time ago.

You wouldn't want the public to know that, but you don't want them to think the agency was totally oblivious either.

They're Intel, after all. He needs to be seen to be on the radar is some way, shape or form.

The FBI setting out to arrest anyone who has made a threatening comment online for "thought crimes" really is a precedent that should not be sought due to events like this, seeing as thousands of such comments are made by trolls all the time, however the outright lies from the FBI need to be addressed. Anybody who is proficient in IT and has the resources available to the FBI would be able to trace the IP and identify the person making these comments 'throwaway email address' or not.

This rings back to the case where the FBI 'had to' reach out to outside sources to crack the password on an Apple device to gain access. That is utter bollocks. An everyday person can learn how to break into a device with a simple google search and some time spent on developer forums.

That being said, IMO, at the very least the FBI could have traced down the person who made the comment and interview them personally - not just the person who made the report to the FBI. This interview would not have to end in a charge but could instead simply dissuade said person from acting out on said person and gee I don know! perhaps they could reach out to the person and get them help, minimizing the risk of them acting out on said comment. Psychiatric holds and evaluations are already perfectly legal given proper circumstances. The FBI dropped the ball on this one, again, even if that means setting future precedents. Trolling is one thing. Making specific comments such as this in addition to having a past history and making numerous public posts celebrating weapons with ominous comments is another.

No one is calling for persecution for thought crimes.

The fact that the FBI knew and didn't either handle this in an effective manner nor hand it off to the locals would be along the lines of dropping the ball. Same in Orlando and San Bernadino.

If he said he wanted to be a professional cop shooter he probably would have been questioned.
