VA Secretary Shulkin misused government resources, Inspector General says

The Department of Veteran's Affairs Office of the Inspector General has issued a report on it's investigation into VA Secretary David Shulkin's trip to Wimbledon last year, and has come to the conclusion that it was a waste of taxpayer money and time.

On top of that, it found that his chief of staff made deliberate misrepresentations to investigators, going so far as to alter official emails in an effort to secure taxpayer funding for the airfare to get across the pond. Shulkin told investigators that the tickets to Wimbledon were a gift from a friend, and investigators were able to determine that to be false. Finally, Shulkin used staffmembers to arrange sightseeing tours and excursions for his wife, and it appears that at least half of the ten day trip was spent sightseeing. The total cost of the trip is around $122,000.

Both sides of the aisle in Congress have issued statements condemning the actions the IG found Shulkin and his chief of staff had taken. Though he denies the findings of the report entirely, Shulkin has apparently agreed to reimburse the cost of the airfare and tickets, but nothing else.

Shulkin was initially an Obama appointee, starting out in Health and Human Services, before Trump appointed him to the VA position. To me, that's neither here nor there. He's worked for both of them. If we're going to talk about accountability in government, hold them accountable. Period.

They need to check his tenure at Health and Human Services as well. If he abused the VA he probably did the same at HHS.
