I seem to remember a story with this idea of "fixing things" as a topic ... served as a farily serious cautionary tale ... what was it again?

Oh yes, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (1886).

Variant sexual orientations and gender identities are part of the human gestalt. Negative attitudes are cultural factors.

There have always been gay folks and trans folks. These characteristics have evolved as part of our social makeup.

Anything else is simply belief.

So you don't think we should fix intolerance even if we could?

No, because it evolved for a reason. It helped keep us alive. It aids in social structure.

You fix it by teaching humans to not be animals.

Im not a fan of genetic tinkering.

We fix clef lips at birth.. that’s not life threatening, but it will have a negative societal reaction.. so we fix it..

It is t the clef lip persons fault..

It is society who are mean..

But we still fix them..

I see nothing wrong with repairing a cleft palate.

You want to change how people "are".

The beauty of humanity is in our flaws.

Nope...flaws are never beautiful..they are signs of damage which leads to suffering...all of the time.

Why would a liberal fix any "thing" in the womb. It's not even a human to them. Just a fetus that can be tossed away for any reason.

No, people should allowed to be people, however they wish. We should endevor to rid ourself of the hormones and other possibly contributing factors we pollute our foods with and bar the practice of gender reassignment surgery pre adult and until stats change about the fallings of single parent families restrict adoption until a fix can be found.

I find a lot of gay people to be highly empathetic and creative. Dare I say, a look at history will prove this to be true?

Would 'fixing' something that's not necessarily broke cause a butterfly effect in the future, where our society turns into a bleak, grey existence where art and empathy are non-existent.

And finally, even if the wiring 'looks' wrong.....what if it is simply happening that way for a reason?

Honestly, and please don't hate on me for offering this opinion, but I see transgender and gay as being Mother Natures checks and balances for population control. My biggest disagreement is gay people using IVF or donor people to subvert nature to have children when there are so many misplaced children on this planet needing a loving family.

Why stop at sexual orientation, let's just cut to the chase and go ahead and pre-program everyone to fill a certain roll in society....and make everyone white too.

Wonder how long before this thread is closed.

Why do you care what parts grown people want to stick into or around other grown people, if everyone is consenting, let it be.

Well if, it is genetic, their is obviously something wrong with the homosexual brain.

It is either genetic or a choice, if it is genetic it is obviously a defect, like any other mental disability, that doesn’t mean it should be fixed or that it has a negative impact on ones life other than the way society might treat / react to something outside of the “norm”; however, it isn’t evolutionarily sustainable.

If it is a choice, so be it go and have fun, we have enough people as it is.

For this thought experiment i need anyone who participates to pretend a couple things..

1) we find the cause of being gay and trans and it is biological. Let’s say it is as “simple” as some brain wiring that is supposed to go left, but instead goes right..

2) we have a 100% safe and 100% effective way to cure it.

So under those circumstances. What should we do??

Should we start fixing it before birth , which would inherently erase gay/trans people from humanity????

Or should we “leave it be”??

Maybe the biological changes we find in their genes was the "fix" to cure heterosexuality.

Should we cure heterosexuality, if we could?

Look how much problems is caused in society by having males and females around. All the harrassment claims, the #MeToo movement, the #TimesUp movement, etc...all keep telling us that heterosexual attraction is a disease, and people are looking for a way out.

I have to go with no, I do not have scientific reason its pretty much just an emotional reason.

If our tech was so good we could do that safely how long till we "fix" gingers, short people, curvy people, emotional people, strongly independent people etc etc...yea yea slippery slope arguments suck.

I feel something of that magnitude is a personal decision. I cannot make that for someone else.

I think fixing your thought process would be more of a priority. It's disturbing you think this way.

Totally straight here btw.

The thread wont be closed so long as ATS members remain within the forum guidelines and dont abuse each other over opinions and because its a thought experiment on the ethics of genetic manipulation

thing is , there will always be someone born who doesnt want to be straight or gay .

I mean think about it , if you are born into a family with 4 brothers and you are the youngest your chance of being born gay is higher according to that study.

What if when you are born and you learn this in school , your future has already been predetermined by nature , so I think people will naturally want to do the opposite because they never had the choice, humans love to be able to assert their free will , and ego and identity has a strong affect on humans.

So I think we will always have people wanting to change their sexual orientation if its possible.

Say for example I was born into a family with a large group of males and I was born gay because of this natural occurrence , but I grew up and wanted to have a female partner and have children, but nature has already determined im to be gay.
Just to ensure the survival of the species. Seems a bit unfair really , so people will always want to determine their own life

Its amazing to think that nature controls us so much , quite mad actually

And people with Down-syndrome know they are different from normal people, that’s why homosexuality is genetic, just like a lot of disorders.

Doesn’t mean that “fixing” it does more harm than good or is even needed.

I have no issues with it at all , in fact that study just supports it even further for me as not only does it create some compassionate people but also helps keep populations in check. I just cant help but think there will always be a person who doesnt want to be what they are from birth

careful homosexuality is not a disorder , according to that study its a natural process in which nature determines stress factors on the survival of the family unit and takes measure to ensure those stress factors are mitigated

down syndrome is a classified disability and is vastly different from homosexuality

My answer to this specific question is no! You shouldn´t have used right or left as an example either.

I also don´t believe that being gay is something genetic. I think it has to do with the "soul-layer", not the "cell-layer" of our blueprint.

I think, generally we don´t have the right to manipulate on that level EXCEPT if it´s health related. But how do we define "normal health condition". Health is generally body related (there are connections, though). Therefoer, please leave the soul-part alone, and therefore gays, left, right, anarchists, democrats, religious people of any kind, non religious people of any kind, regardless the skin color, heritage, language, culture or ANYTHING else I´ve forgot to mention (you get the drift -> soul related)

But, I give you credit for asking it.

TL;DR: NO!!!

I've got news for you guys and gals. There is already a test to determine homosexuality in the fetus at 3 weeks that is 90%+ accurate.

It has been buried and hidden because TPTB don't want us to have the ability to abort a child if it is gay.
