The burglar put three tapes in a brown envelope, hid them under a parked car, and then called police from a public phone, directing them to go find it.

vintage cameras and recording equipment can fetch some serious money these days .

the evidence would be admissible however the burgler would still face burglary charges. the evidence was not obtained by law enforcement nor any of their agents, so it would be admissible. look up fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine, since inadmissibility is determined primarily thru determining if LAW ENFORCEMENT did anything illegal to obtain the evidence.

...or coerced, or in any way implied that a non law enforcement person should steal such evidence.

Even criminals have little patience with kiddie molesters. They tend to die in prison when folks know what they are in for.
