Is this the "Green revolution #2" ? No its not. here is why:
In 2009 when right-winger Ahmadinejad was voted, leftist (different from leftists in EU) supporters poured into the street to support their candidate
Mir-housain-mousavi. the protests quickly turned violent as security forces confronted the protesters and those protests started to threaten the
existence of Islamic revolution after some time for many reasons:
1- the protests had popular support and millions of people actually supported mir hussain
2- they challenged THE most important pillar of Islamic revolution which gave it any legitimacy it has: Democracy.
3- the protests had legitimate leaders who were all known to people as patriots. mir-hussain for example was one of founders of Islamic revolution
After some time and foreign meddling, people started to realize that their legitimate requests are being derailed by foreign intervention and they
also feared their revolution was now at danger so they took the measure at their own hands and they started the biggest rallies in the history of Iran
in support of the revolution. after those rallies all the protests ended as the overwhelming majority of people (many of them participating in the
protests before) voiced their concerns about the path the protests were now taking.
so that all ended and in the next elections people overwhelmingly voted for Rouhani - the now leftist president of Iran.
leftists believe Iran should engage with west and should not be the one who closes the doors to dialogue (contrary to right-wingers). Rouhani came
into power with the promise of the nuclear deal and a stronger economy. He, unfortunately, failed miserably
Failing to strengthen the economy due to the noncompliance of Trump regime to the deal, was a hail mary for the right-wingers to embarrass the
leftists.
So they foolishly thought its a good idea to ignite protests against corruption and high prices. these protests-again-quickly turned violent and got
out of control.
this time not because of police intervention,as the interventions were smartly very limited but because the protesters were violent.
the protests are now almost defeated and here are the reasons:
1- they did not have public support. the reason as why they got so much media attention was the damage that was caused to public
2- they didn't have any goal and no one actually knew what these protesters want, except for the slogans against the Islamic revolution
3- they didn't have legitimate leaders. the leaders of these protests were MKO terrorist establishment in France and remnants of Shah's dictatorial
regime
4- they targeted the security of the people and one of Iranian people's few reasons why they have hope for future is actually the great security we
have.
So summarize it all:
These protests not only did NOT weaken the Islamic regime but also bolstered it -contrary to what we saw in 2009.
