US is building super dreadnought Aircraft Carriers while the rest of the world builds 'fleets' of anti shipping missiles.

Whose going to win that "Defense" budget war, or the real one if shooting starts.

Yeah, nothing new about this. If anything Russia is playing catch-up, we never stopped and that whole collapse of the USSR thing knocked them back a bit.

In the UK all the spying stuff was never shut off, it just evolved. The likes of the Menwith Hill installation are still running, as ATSers we've probably heard of the likes of ECHELON.

I couldn't agree more. And the way we spread our selves thin and throw resources at endless wars in the cock manner we do, all it would take is a half ass alliance to "inconvenience" the military.

We lost more soldiers in our Middle East wars than 9/11. Is that a win? Maybe, if the countries we went to war with were better off like the way we used to conduct a "gentleman's" war.

WWII wasn't perfect, and we had our flaws. But Germany and Japan are top allies and in the strongest economies in the world in just a few generations.

We've only had money hemorrhaging since then when it comes to war, and we drag it out. It's like we took a step back.

Problems all ready solved there is a new fiber optic cable and you cant tap in to them and you cant do anything short cutting it.

I feel the two comments above yours say a lot about what is going on.

The MIC loves it, the picture IgnoranceIsntBlisss put up kind of spells it out.

You can't win a nuclear war conventionally, you can't even win a nuclear war tbh. I'm not sure if anyone in their right mind would think so.

The coalition never ended, you could say WWII ended in a cease fire... Because to be frank about it, the US and it's allies are set and ready for any conflict.

When you've got enough conventional weapons scattered around the globe to silence any enemy then that isn't "defensive" capabilities, that's offensive capabilities.

To say otherwise is a lie, I wouldn't be surprised if such comments are to convince themselves.

Yeah, russia is too evil. It touches the NATO/"U"S external borders with it´s own territory, what a rogue nation...

One might imagine that by cutting the undersea network that the russians would be cutting themselves offline in the process . But , while the BRICAS nations have got their own undersea network developing or perhaps near completion now then such action as cutting would become a possible opportunity which carries consequences .

An impression or implied expression might b ethat the russians per se , don't want to attcck or threaten the west but taek a defensive line . Also that they would like to see some justice occur within america and britain while their intelligence networks have brought to light criminality within our systems, by force of necessity in their own national defense and international obligations .Their expectation is that we prosecute at home , and our expectation is that we shouldn't be pusherd around by russia . The onus is on us to crush basic criminality clearly identified within our systems , as the russians know us better than we know ourselves . They expect us to enforce basic laws, but boris wont be calling them off etc

Eh, makes sense. Our assets have been cutting/tapping deep-sea fiber for a decade (or more). Actions have consequences, and the precedent we set absolutely applies to other major powers like RU/CN.

All those cables are secure shuttered systems so what are the Russians hoping to accomplish there?

why do u say it cant be tapped? theyve been tapping fiber optic cables for decades. plus the problem lies with the fact that they dont even have to tap it secretly any longer. its done with the cooperation of the people who own those lines. dig deeper and youll see its been known for quite some time that all traffic is being intercepted and they have the capabilities to record everything if they wanted to. NSA and CIA HQ are just a stones throw away from the virginia HQ for that cable they are talking about in the article u linked

That's an interesting angle. I hadn't thought of that. But you're absolutely right. They don't even attempt to compete with us anymore in regards to defense spending. Nor do they have to. It's all about cyber warfare nowadays. Even the DPRK gets that.

I dont know how many times we located Russian tags on the cable going to greenland. In 1992 we found tracs on the sea bed all along these cables.

We even found tracks on the sea bed leading into Norway. Not only that..... we even manged to find maps of Norway that were more detailed then Our own.

We fallowed Russian tracks from the shores of Norway all through Sweeden and Finland.

And right back to the doorstep of off-shore NSA taps. That is OK though, I suspect all the major powers have spliced into this network of fiber. I'm surprised non-state actors haven't got into the game yet, probably because of the cost/sophistication required to reach the cable/splice it without creating any noticeable problems (which would be immediately recognizable).

And the depths these cables are located. Reminds me a bit about my concern of scuttled ships containing nerve agent stockpiles (Operation CHASE) being recovered by non-state actors/terrorists. There are also several nuclear weapons that were lost at sea. Though, if the Navy's recovery operations didn't find them, then I doubt an average joe would have any better of a chance.
