This is in Education and Media because it speaks to the little "tricks of the trade" that the media uses to draw our attention.

This morning I was googling the California wild fires to get the latest news and of course dozens of articles popped up each with similar article titles so I scrolled through them to decide which one to read...when I saw an article with basically the same article title as the rest but with the addition of the phrase "celebrities flee their homes" so no more thought was necessary, I clicked on that one. And it turned out that pretty much all of the articles included the celebrity information but their's weren't the ones that I clicked on first.

So, what was it exactly that compelled you to click on my thread title? And how could I have improved it's effectiveness?

I clicked on it because I wanted to tell you how the internet is awful enough with all the clickbait, and ask why you added more.

You clicked the link that mentioned celebrities because you obviously care about them. Now your personal ranking for looking at celebrity related stuff went up a notch, and celebrity related adwords will be used to target clickbait for you just a little bit more than it did yesterday.

For some dumb reason, I pretty much click on all the threads on ATS.

So that's my answer, probably not what you were hoping for.

What compelled me to click on this thread?
It was at the top of the list.

What could have improved it’s effectiveness?

Having some interesting content, because next time a title looks clickbaity I am not clicking on it, but I probably will cause I always do.

You got me, I hope it feels good!

What I was getting at is what makes good click bait? There's got to be some sort of formula worked out that they're using on us.
From my replies I'd have to say anything that irritates people and makes them want to tell you off works pretty good.

Well anyway as I always say..."Made you look!"

I looked at the title and though Nah I'll leave that one then looked again and saw someone had replied so thought, ah maybe it is worth checking out just to see what they are replying too.

And fell into the net.

You know it's cruel to hold a carrot on a stick in front of a donkey and curiosity - well cat's beware.

The worst click bate is in the Adverts that we see on site's not only ATS, thing's like Have you seen how this star or that star look now which attract the morbid curiosity in the small part of our brain's, we all fall for it and if we did not then the advertising industry simply would not exist - at least to the size it is today - then again perhaps we would then have far better politician's in all country's - or just maybe worse?.

I saw a thing once where they put a WAIT HERE sign in the middle of a mall and as long as they had at least one person already waiting there others would get in line as well even though there was no indication as to what they were waiting for.
Same thing.

So, what was it exactly that compelled you to click on my thread title?

Because I like to live life on the edge and I'm a manly-man, and I felt you were trying to call me a sissy. And no one calls me a sissy.. no one! So as soon as I read the title, I clicked it so fast and it felt great reaffirming my manliness.

Don't mess with me.

I clicked because of all those flashing coloured lights and that pounding techno music!!!

Don't you hear it?

Also, if someone tells me not to do something I'm pulled in like a sucker.

Every time.
