Don't put that situation in terrestrial terms. Is not going to be negotiations. No diplomacy. No business.

It will be a "take over" scenario, in friendly terms or forced by a situation created by humans or by a cosmic event.

That's probable, but not a certainty. I'm sure we can agree that if our good ol' human species decided to band together globally to build a colony ship we could with our current tech. The biggest issue we face with such a task is energy, but we are also on the verge of a breakthrough in fusion tech.

Its also worth noting that the US and Japan are exploring a joint mission to develop and construct an orbiting lunar space station. Considering the long held beliefs in conspiracy theory circles that the dark side of the moon is used as a landing site/base of operations for alien activity it could open a whole world in black op projects.

2. Unless you think they live somewhere in our solar system, simply overcoming the distances would require far better technology than everything we have now.

Even the closest stars are more than 4 light years away, which is more than 23 trillion miles away. A quick search claims the fastest space craft so far is around 36,000 miles per hour, which means a trip there with our fastest craft would take more than 638 million hours (which is around 73,000 years). And that's if the journey was a completely unrealistic straight line to get there.

So even if their spacecraft was 20 times faster than what we have today, it would still take more than 3,600 years to get here (and I've been rounding down the whole time). Forget the propulsion systems; the life support systems, maintenance systems, food storage/agricultural needs, and material's durability would have to be way more advanced than what we have here in order to sustain living creatures for more than 3,600 years straight while going in a straight line towards Earth. And the requirements are far beyond that once we start talking about star systems that are millions or billions of light years away from us.

So yeah, I stand by my previous statement that their tech would need to be light years ahead of ours for them to even reach us.

Hey, that's cheating. Supposedly it only reached that speed because of Jupiter's gravity pulling it in. And I didn't include the the Sun-related ones because I think their speed is only because they're orbitting the Sun. I was referring to the New Horizons probe as it was leaving Earth. Then again, I did say it was just a quick search so

Either way, just divide my rough calculations by roughly 4.5 and you'll get somewhat accurate numbers. So even if ET's spacecraft were 20 times faster than that 165,000 mph figure, it would still take at least 800 years for them to reach us, meaning the points about dependable onboard systems is still valid. And that's if they were at the nearest stars to us. The numbers and technological requirements for spacecraft that are thousands, millions, or billions of light years away would need to be even more light years ahead of what we have.

Yes, that is correct, but the Juno craft didn't have a propulsion system on board for acceleration, only for trajectory adjustments. So with only gravity it reached that speed. Had it accelerated the entire way to Jupiter the speed would have been much higher.

The thing we've never done is try making a spacecraft that keeps accelerating after the initial launch phase.

Its such a sad thought. When you consider ethics and the actions of our governments tbey truly are some of our most offensive humans. It would be a shame if the gov made first contact because they’d create a very negativity impression of our species.

From experiences with our thug gov i can only imagine them pulling the sycophantic crap for a while before jokingly throwing out suggestions to give them technology which woukd help them supress their enemies. Like testing the waters in a way. Then going straight to relentless requests for them to aid in the murder of “our” enemies.

I can only hope they’d study us all before making contact. Watch our mainstream news and the internet to get an idea of how putrid many are so they wouldn’t make contact with selfish self serving filth

Youre right. Think about this: If we add up all the odds and use some basic logic? Our govs have long, long been involved already with them. They arent gonna tell us. They never tell us anything.

Im convinced they are here, dealing with govs and for a long time, control the will of the people, direct and mis-direct us...all the while us "peons" are still waiting around watching the skies.

That is one reason why people with psychic talent are targeted by "ETs" and others.

Yes, there's a lot to be said for setting up camp in the deepest ocean depths. Lot's of resources and space down there as well as privacy.

There's a very popular theme in post-60s ufology of sightings near water and strange lights under the oceans. I guess the earliest that springs to mind is Columbus in his diaries. Since then there have been thousands (Colares 1977 was a busy one too) more.

I figure it's our surface water itself that would make our planet unique to them. If they wanted to mine other minerals, there are other places they could colonize that are much closer to them (and of course they could just harvest meteors, moons, and other common celestial bodies).

And if they're as advanced as I'm thinking they are, then we're just as primitive as chimps or ravens to them. Our technology only seems advanced to us because we're comparing it to our own imaginations. In other words, I really expect them to ignore us the same way we ignore termites/termite mounds.

I know we all like sci-fi stories where aliens are humanoids with advanced technology that's coincidentally similar to what humans already have. But when I think about it logically, it doesn't make sense to me that they would evolve the same way primates did on Earth. I'm doubting that we'd even recognize each other's technology, like a dog trying to understand a circuit board.
