Supposedly it only reached that speed because of Jupiter's gravity pulling it in

Yes, there's a lot to be said for setting up camp in the deepest ocean depths. Lot's of resources and space down there as well as privacy.
There's a very popular theme in post-60s ufology of sightings near water and strange lights under the oceans. I guess the earliest that springs to mind is Columbus in his diaries. Since then there have been thousands (Colares 1977 was a busy one too) more.
