Flea market photo shows 'Billy the Kid and man who shot him'

The picture was perchased in 2011 by a US lawyer at a flea market North Carolina for just $10 , it's now been identified as a picture of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett back when they were friends and is estimated to be worth around $5 Million.

The photo - which is dated 2 August 1880 - had been hanging in a rental guest room in his home for several years, he said. "If I had known it was one of the most famous photos in history, I would have charged more for the room!" he laughed.

He enlisted Robert Stahl, a retired professor emeritus at the Arizona State University, to identify whether the image featured the pair as well as several other forensic experts. William Dunniway, a tintype expert, told the New York Times the photo was probably taken between 1875 and 1880. He worked with forensics expert Kent Gibson to conclude that the two men were pictured.

A Los Angeles forensic video expert said facial recognition software suggested that it was most likely a photo of them while a handwriting expert in Texas compared a signature from Garrett on the photo with 10 documents that included his handwriting. He also found them to match, the Associated Press news agency reported.

It's hard to tell. In the outdoor photo he's the dude on the left with the fashionable stripped sweater and tall hat. None of them in the photo really look like that but that ones blurry. There are other photos. The guy was sort of a ham for the camera considering the time when he lived

Thank you so much for sharing! I have an interest in their period of history and just recently researched the life of the Kid. I was unaware that such a picture of him existed, just that common one we've all seen. He looks full of energy here, which he certainly would have to have been.

Pat Garrett is the guy with the mustache on the right and I think Billy is on the left smoking the cigar ... I think.

Garret looks like Matthew McConaughey in the Dallas Buyers Club. The cheekbones and thin neck tells us this individual was poor and undernourished. Billy looks very spare as though he's got a larger frame with not a lot of meat on his bones.

Whoever is holding the revolver looks cold badass. The way he looks out of the photo makes him look like he was about to gun down the photographer. "Mad Dog. Don't make me mad."

Must admit I find the picture fascinating , I wonder what led up to the picture being taken and where they went after , perhaps some wild west saloon to continue their R&R before continuing on somewhere else , I can almost hear the out of tune piano in the background , smell the smell of an unsanitised town and hear the bustle of life going on around them.

It's like a window into a different world.

Very cool picture, I love old shots like these.

I'm not so sure we have them both in the shot because Pat and Billy were not friends like many think, it could be a shot of a few of the Tunstall boys??

I think Pat Garrett is unmistakable and given the match of his handwriting on the picture I think it is Pat on the right , experts seem to think it is Billy in the picture and to be honest I'm inclined to believe them.

It's hard to say, I've seen pics of Garrett with a fuller face then this one, but still possible since they met in early 1880 and gambled together at the same casino until Pat became sheriff in Nov 1880.


Also Pat had some bad luck after he killed the Kid, owed lots of money was a loser of a gambler so I can see him riding the Kid legacy and signing his name on anything Billy and the Regulators hunt.



The guy on the right sure does have the same eye brows as Pat??

The guy to his left in the pic looks like dirty Dave Rudabugh.

I think the pic is reversed, didn't Billy favor his right hand?

I wonder if the guy in the shadow is Jose Chavez y Chavez?

On November 30, 1880, Billy the Kid, David Anderson (aka: Billy Wilson,) and Rudabaugh rode into White Oaks, New Mexico and ran into Deputy Sheriff James Redman. Taking shots at the deputy, Redman hid behind a saloon as several local citizens ran into the street, chasing the fugitives out of town.
