Malawi vampire rumors cause mob violence

According to a Malawi psychologist mentioned in the source article, social media and economic stresses are at the root of the stoning deaths of 9 people accused of vampirism.

Malawi, located Northeast of Zimbabwe on the African Continent has seen 9 deaths and over 140 arrests since the start of September of this year. On 10/19/17 alone, 2 people were killed as a result of accusations of "ritual blood sucking."

I believe it is very likely these are cases of mass-hysteria and social stresses leading to paranoia and violence. However, there have been more than 140 people involved in the attacks and it is hard to dismiss each case with the same cause. Claims of vampirism are not new to the country, which have now gotten to the point where UN staff left the country for their own safety.

So my question is to you, ATS, do you agree with the psychologist's explanation or is it possible something more sinister is at play here? Many cultures and legends around the world tell of vampires, and evidence suggests they were once taken very seriously by authorities (in less enlightened times, granted). The part I find curious is their selection of vampirism as their casus belli as opposed to any number of other mob battle cries.

My belief is (not surprisingly) that mass-hysteria and instant communication coupled with third world living conditions are at the root of the attacks. However, would love to hear some other takes on this especially if anyone here is familiar with the area/local customs & culture.

Demon-Haunted World, as a smart man wrote.

Primitive people who think all sorts of nonsense. Read about what they do to albinos in the motherland.

This is probably no different than poor people in this country who think that the government is the cause of their problems, even though it's business and their own lack of education largely responsible.

Or the "fake news" or "deep state" entities being imagined as scapegoats for the failures of a certain savior of half of America who is actually doing nothing to help them.

Sounds like they're got a full blown Hematology Justice Warrior movement on their hands over there.

Yeah, low average intelligence. That's literally the reason why this is happening.

Agreed. Like people who blame law enforcement and politicians for alleged "institutional racism" and whatnot - instead of taking responsibility for their own future/success. That's what you're talking about, right?

Last I checked it wasn't "poor people" in this country attacking innocent bystanders or even tearing/burning down their own cities over some imagined sleight.

In any case, I don't think your explanation fully describes the type of activity we're seeing in Malawi. I take it from your reply you don't believe vampires exist/are to blame? I don't either. I mean I'm open to the possibility, but have no such evidence to support such a conclusion.

That's hilarious IIB, the "HJW movement"

Maybe it is the REAL reason for United Nations involvement there

So, social media is blamed, and before there was such a thing, economic issues and others ere blamed? How about blaming superstition, which is the real cause, unless they actually have vampires? Either way, it isn't social media; it's the belief that someone is a vampire. All social media could do is make it faster to get the word out, for any potential action.

Whatever caused the to believe that some people were vampires is the root of the problem, and what needs to be addressed.

Malawi has a big problem with people practicing black magic. I know a lot of modernized folks think it's a joke, but it is no joke. When you have people literally helping the demon realm and calling upon evil powers, almost anything is possible. I would say vampires would be small potatoes compared to some of the things that can happen. People have reported being attacked by vampire type humans even in New Orleans and guess what is big there? people practicing Black magic.

It doesn't prove anything except possibly that where you have heavy black magic loving folks, you also have reports of weird scary things happening and being reported as being witnessed there as well.

So do you have any idea why the IQ there is so low?

Do you think they are simply stupid people ?

Poor education facilities.

Most of these people don't have access to primary schools. It's either too expensive for your typical family to send a child to school or simply not available in their area, and they can't afford to travel.

Yes you are correct, I was just curious if the member was aware of why these people are as low as they are, so many have no clue of the oppression and direction these people are forced into.

They are destroying America by supporting the worst person they possibly could to lead our country, largely because of superstition and ignoracne. how is that different?

No one is destroying America. We are rebuilding it after the past 30 something years of corruption, criminality, incompetency and self-righteous greed.

Politicians like the Clintons who sold our country out for personal enrichment, The Bushes who are low IQ puppets of the corrupt establishment (and several secret societies) and Obama who was about as smart as the fruit sitting on my kitchen counter.

That is our problem. Some of those corrupt institutions did need to be torn down before we could start rebuilding them, yes. The only other option would be allowing our country to fail, which none of us will ever accept. We'll cut as many programs and as much government spending as needed, but capitalism will thrive on without nearly as much socialism bogging it down.

Rugged individualism and personal responsibility is the new order of this nation. Make it on your own, or don't make it at all - the average person is responsible for their own success.
