If they wanted him dead they could have done it at any point in the past 4 years.
Fine line treading between outright attacking Syrian military assets directly and looking like we aren't doing that. Supposedly we are helping them
fight "Isis".
That line got crossed after Trump got elected. The Syrian airbase was attacked with cruise missiles openly, under false pretenses (WMD), the excuse
was supposed chemical attack on Syrian civilians. Up until that point Suryian military units were attacked by 'mistake'. The uS was losing ground to
Russian backed Syrian forces, has pretty much lost the conflict.
So now its parting shots, payback time. Up until this point the Syrian commander was holed up , only becoming vulnerable when he came out in the
open.
Wouldn't be the first time...
