On October 26 Jimmy Carter will be awarded the 2017 Pro Bono Humanum Award. One might think that it is because of his extensive work with Habitat for Humanity but this is for the work that the Carter Center has done in reducing preventable diseases in many parts of the world. This annual award is given for:

The annual Pro Bono Humanum Award was first bestowed in 2007 and recognizes innovative individual and group efforts to improve the human condition through the application of biomedical science to problems in developing or underserved populations worldwide.

The 93 year old ex-president set up the center 35 years ago. What has it accomplished to make him the recipient of this award?

The Carter Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health worldwide. Part of the organization's mission is to create a healthier world through eliminating six core preventable diseases: Guinea worm, river blindness, trachoma, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and malaria in Hispanolia.

Just one year ago, The Carter Center reached a major milestone with the delivery of 500 million doses of donated medicines to target tropical diseases in 14 African and Latin American countries. The Carter Center has played a leadership role in the elimination of river blindness, a parasitic infection, in four of the six Latin American countries where it was endemic (Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Guatemala), and has halted the disease's transmission in several locations in Africa where more than 99 percent of the global cases exist.

The award is going to be presented to his grandson Jason who now runs the center. The article didn't say why Jimmy isn't going to accept it himself. Maybe his health prevents it. He's been hospitalized in the recent past, or maybe he's just humble. Either way, kudos to Jimmy for improving the human condition.
