In the early 60' those plucky spy's at the CIA, managed to borrow, partially take apart, and study a Soviet Luna space probe that was making a goodwill tour. They managed all this, returned the satellite, and the Soviets were none the wiser . We always get to see the failures, but the successes are slow to leak out. Its a pretty good read. Now if we can get the truth on what the Glomar found.......

Sounds like the Russians wanted us to see it .
No way they are that stupid you dont become a world power by just handing over your tek in a cross country site seeing tour .
And notice at teh end it says by the time we got to see it we already had the tek lead so maybe just maybe Russia decided we had the better hand and decided to help it along .
after all its not like we haven't leaked tek to them intentionally .
Being with Government approval .

Those sneaky Russians, however, may have known beforehand and removed/substituted/changed vital aspects of the device in order to hoodwink the CIA into all manner of different scenarios.

It's all just swings and roundabouts really, especially back then where espionage was an art as opposed to a skillset more suited towards the modern day hacker these days than 007.

I posted that tale in my Secrets of the Space Race thread earlier this year.

It's not new and so I am not claiming they copied it from my thread.

But I am 99% certain it happened in Mexico because a certain ATS member gave the game away in another thread.

....Previous acquisitions of Soviet space probes (such as the ‘moon probe’ that was secretly ‘borrowed’ overnight from a touring exhibit in Mexico in 1959) had provided valuable information.

And that person was probably in a position to know the truth.

ETA: I didn't intend for this thread to get closed. My thread was a more general Space Race one. But so be it.
