Russia & NASA Will Team Up to Build Lunar Space Station

“We [Roscosmos and NASA] have agreed to join the project to build a new international Deep Space Gateway station in [the] moon’s orbit,” Roscosmos head Igor Komarov said, as cited by Interfax.
The project is also open for other states to join, including China, India, Brazil, and South Africa, Komarov announced, adding that the various sides discussed their potential contributions to the project. The official was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia on Wednesday.

There are huge problems keeping astronauts healthy in space. If they were smart, and they are, ISS must have been used to do some major research to the ends of keeping everyone healthy.

I've always felt that was the single most important benefit of the ISS. That is, it taught us (and is still teaching us) how humans could safely live in space and better survive the trip to Mars or elsewhere, and even how to live on Mars or elsewhere.

Sure, there are still issues with cosmic radiation that need to be addressed for a long cruise to Mars, but radiation is only one issue. Other long-term manned space exploration issues the ISS has tackled (or has been a test bed for) is the conservation/recycling of consumables, affects of zero-g and low-g on the human body, growing food, robustness of space habitats, ability to maintain and repair your space habitat in-situ (whether it be your craft taking you to Mars or your habitat on the surface of Mars), etc.

The ISS has been the single most effective place for researching and learning how to do those sorts of things -- research and learning that needs to be done before we attempt to send people to Mars (and beyond) to be on their own.

Funny thing about this story... no Russians have ever been over 300mi (500km) in space. Good Luck, Sputniks!
