A Boom in Confederate Monuments, on Private Land

Amazing how many "new" monuments commemorating the Confederacy have been built in recent years.

This article has a few real recent ones.

These apparently are on private land.

What a way to stop the insanity eh.

One of the proudest moments of Robert Eldreth’s life was erecting a Confederate monument on a patch of grass behind the Georgetown Historical Society in 2007. It was the first monument to Delawareans who had served the Confederacy, and the fact that it came 142 years after the end of the war hardly mattered.

“It’s a lesson in history,” said Mr. Eldreth, who led the group that put it up. “It’s about our roots and the sacrifices that those citizens here in Delaware made. To me that’s so honorable.”

But amid the furor over Confederate monuments, touched off by the violence in Charlottesville, Va., two weeks ago, an unexpected reality has largely been overshadowed: While old monuments erected in bygone eras are coming down, new ones continue to go up.

Yeah the losers certainly need more participation trophies...

Good for them.

If people want to glorify traitors they have every right to do so on their land. If the loser lover wants other places may donate their statues to be placed on Eldreth's land.

Yes they do, but.... Black people who were never slaves are fighting white people who were never Nazis over confederate statues erected by democrats, and now democrats can’t stand their own history so they can't continue to stand on our American public land?

Yet modern Republicans claim that those racist Democrats who killed hundreds of thousands of Americans and failed at building a new nation are their own heritage. The same conservatives who whine & moan about people not saluting the American flag or standing for the national anthem seemingly have no problem with waving the flag of racist Democrats who killed Americans and abandoned their American citizenship, or with protecting the "free speech" of neo-Nazis at "Unite the Right" rallies. Funny how that works, right?

As for the OP, I've said many times that I don't care what people do on private property. But I don't want my tax dollars going that crap.

I have ZERO issue with this. The issue with the monuments are those that reside on public lands. period. If you want a statue of say Nathan Forrest to grace your private land that is your right just as its my right to avoid you and your home etc.

600,000 American's died, the country was almost torn into two, Lincoln was arguably assassinated over it, and you compare it to some little league or charity sporting event.
Not the same. Not nearly the same.

Yes the Confederate soldiers were 'technically' fighting for traitors, but honestly, most of them were fighting because of conscription, and to defend their southern pride, the term war of northern aggression actually has meaning you know.

That's the thing about Confederate monuments, nearly all of them were paid for with private donations, both statues (lee and Jackson) and the park land in Charlottesville were donated by a single individual.
People ask why they waited 40 years after the war to erect these monuments.
Fact is the people of the South remained poor for decades after the war and couldn't afford it.

This is because history is important whether folks like it or not, good or bad. It is our history.

That's great news for Confederate buffs. Even Maxine Waters has to respect what is erected on PRIVATE property. Right?

Wouldn't it be cool if the news told everyone it's cool to go out and earn a good living and quit wasting time throwing tantrums over art.

Technically the Founding Fathers were traitors.

I respect the Confederates because they fought honorably for their freedom from the Northern tyranny. You may not agree with their motives, but these were our fathers, brothers and friends that fought this war. There is a REASON people don't want this tragic part of American history to be forgotten.
