I'll be fifty in december, and I know I feel the same way about many of these things.
Though I hate to say it, they are largely my perception of specifically American culture.
I don't watch tv anymore - if ours goes on, it is because we're watching Netflix. But each time I go back to the states, I am completely overwhelmed
and irritated by the tv programs and commercials. I can't watch them. It's all so overblown to bombard your senses !
I can't stand all the superhero action movies that come out of there, nor the food..... things so frigging overdone with different tastes piled on so
heavily you can no longer tell them apart- the meat could be squirrel for all you can tell, the veggies could have been rotten. Even dog poop covered
with melted cheese, chili powder, bacon, jalapenos, sour cream, onions etc. can pass without notice!
On one hand, I could say I found a place more suited to the kind of life I want - but then, there are different things to complain about. Yesterday I
was pissed because I watched a french movie everyone claimed ws excellent, but in between some pornagraphic scenes, the rest was all silent face shots
lasting forever and no frigging plot besides "couple meet, have love affair, then break up". I was mad because I wasted a couple of hours wondering
when the good part would start. Goddamn it, you can go too far with subtle meaning too, believe it or not.
I actually enjoyed the third "The Planet of the Apes" the day before, i kept marveling at the technological progress we have now, and I found lots of
the usual human themes we've alway included , all the way back to Shakespeare, just in another form. So I guess I don't reject all american culture
or products!
I will complain about the woman who stayed with us last week, who constantly had her phone in hand, either posting or taking selfies. She spurred
everyone else to do the same at a beautiful restaurant terrace, as I was the only one who didn't bring mine and sat at the table of five feeling
lonely and beign the only one to appreciate the surroundings. Damn social media.
But then I am thrilled that my daughter calls me on facetime daily and my two year old grandson waves at me and talks to me about whatever new words
he learned that day, and blows me kisses! That is awesome!
I was watching some show the other day about life in the early 1800's and thinking geezus, what hell that must have been for most people! But I bet
little things meant a lot, the world was heaped in meaning - like a peice of dried up bread meaning "survival".
Seems we humans always have some sort of complaint with life, no matter what the circumstances!
