The sudden gust of wind came out of nowhere. It went through the trees pushing its way ahead for a brief moment then died down. The bright morning sun hid behind a dark cloud but quickly came out again to restore everything as it supposed to be, a quite warm start of a beautiful summer day in the forest and the mountain right next to it. As there was no one around, only the wild animals heard the whisper in the wind…’Help’

Jack reached out and turned the radio off. It was playing country music, perfect for a drive, but suddenly it changed the song to an old Beatles piece called Help. He liked the Beatles but unfortunately what seemed like a technical error, instead of the full song, the radio started to repeat the first refrain over and over….

“ Help! I need somebody
Help! Not just anybody
Help! You know I need someone
Help! “

He and his wife Sue were driving around of the state of Buffalo, without a destination, away from civilization. It was a beautiful drive, the road they were on led them ahead between a thick forest on the left side and a crystal clear lake on the right. The scenery was breath taking in the summer morning as the car engine’s quiet hum and the waking nature’s noises mixed into a calm and peaceful reality. It was very different from a moment ago when suddenly the sun disappeared behind the darkest cloud he ever saw, although for a brief second only. He looked over to his wife, who just finished watching a video of an alleged ghost sighting. She shut the laptop off and said,

‘Yep it’s fake, no doubt about it, and it’s not even a good one. You can actually see the strings on the flying objects, and funny enough, everything that airborne goes towards him.’

‘That’s what I thought’ Jack said. ‘Again some fake bull#.’

Neither of them believed in any of the ghost stories, and as a hobby, they watched every video they could just to prove them a hoax. So far nothing they saw stood true, all videos had a small give away. Sometimes it took hours to notice, but without fail they always spotted something that killed the lies.

It started years ago when Jack’s brother Jesse passed away in St. Augustine. The police said they found Jesse in an abandoned parking lot, unconscious with grave injuries. The investigation led nowhere and been closed with more questions than answers, as the leading police officer also disappeared without a trace days later. Upon receiving the news of his brother, Jack and Sue flew to Florida immediately and run to the hospital where Jesse stayed in a coma. He came out of it only once, right before he died. He looked at Joe and started to tell a story about a small movie theatre, ghosts and monsters, even Anna his wife who passed away months before Jesse. Although his mind seemed clear, the story was dark and confusing, and before he could explain it any further his heart stopped and life left his broken body.

Jack was furious and his natural scepticism turned into anger and later it led him and Sue to a bitter fight against all ghostly stories, both of them keen to prove them wrong.

‘I still don’t understand why people make these videos’ Jack said looking back to the road.

She looked at him smiling. ‘Don’t forget people are people, they would do anything for likes or a brief attention. Even silly things like this video.’

Jack was driving for a few hours now but he didn’t mind. He and his wife loved to do this, discover new places they never been at, usually abandoned empty roads with no one else around them. They been in many places, and once they did the famous Route 66, one of the first highways within the U.S highway system, originally ran from Chicago through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California. A total of 2448 miles from the start to the end. They didn’t mind to be uncomfortable and didn’t mind the lack of showers. They were happy to see new things.

He drove with a steady speed of 50 miles per hour when he saw a crossing coming up. There was a stop sign so he slowed down to a halt.

‘Why left?’ he asked looking at Sue.

She looked at him clearly not understanding the question. ‘What do you mean?’ she asked.

‘You just said go to the left, why?’

She now looked confused and said ‘No, I didn’t say anything.’

‘Weird, I could swear I heard you’ Jack said, and slowly started to roll the car making a decision of which way to go.

‘Ok, well let’s go to the left than whatever you heard’ she said dismissing the issue as a misunderstanding.

Jack turned the steering wheel and pulled to the left speeding up away from the lake. The forest, now on both sides of the road started to clear out, just a little as they got closer to the mountain.

He saw the woman in the middle of the road at the last second just enough time to come to a sudden stop. She was in her forties, clearly disrupted, yelling something. Jesse looked at Sue as he wasn’t sure what to do. The woman run up to his windows in a rush still shouting but Jack couldn’t understand her clearly. He opened the door and got out. She grabbed his arm in panic speaking fast in Spanish. Then she realised Jack doesn’t understand so she quickly switched to English.

‘Help me please, come quick, please help my baby’ She cried out loud, and started to pull Jack into the forest.

He followed her automatically Sue being behind him, running for a few meters, when he saw the car crashed into a tree. A small fire started under the engine slowly growing getting hotter by the minute. Jack shook the woman’s hand of and started to sprint towards the vehicle. As he got to the back door he saw a toddler, a little girl in the car about two years old. No visible injuries but crying and confused. Jack immediately started to pull the door open but it was stuck.

The flames from the front, now reached the hood and was getting bigger. Jack turned around and looked at the woman few feet behind, quietly crying. He started to panic and with a sudden extra power he pulled the door open ripping the handle off. He reached in for the child and pulled her out. As he was in the car he saw another person behind the wheel, not moving. He turned around again looking for the woman but couldn’t see her as Sue was right behind him blocking his view. Jack gave the child to Sue and stepped to the front door. The fire was extremely hot now and he knew the fuel tank could blow up in any second. With all his strength left he ripped the front door open and looked at the person. There was blood everywhere and the body was limp against the steering wheel. He reached in and pulled the head back. What he saw made him froze up. His heart almost jumped out of his chest and goose bumps covered his entire body. He straightened up and gave way to Sue to look in the car.

They both turned around facing the woman behind them, but she was not there anymore. Instead she was sitting behind the wheel, a huge gap in her forehead, bleeding a lot, and not breathing. She was clearly dead of the head injury. A small gust of wind blew towards them feeding the flames making the temperature so hot they had to step back a few feet, then even more. As the fire finally reached the tank, the car blew up with a loud bang.

They looked everywhere for the woman, but couldn’t find her as if she disappeared into thin air. They just looked at each other, Sue holding the child and without words they knew exactly what happened and they also knew that something had changed in them forever. Jack remembered his brother and started to cry, tears slowly coming down on his face, while Sue pulled out her mobile and dialled 911. They went back to their car and while waiting for help, Sue opened his laptop and deleted all the videos one by one. After the last one she shut the computer off and put it away.

The End

Great follow up to your theatre story .
You should compile a series of them for a book .

That was a nasty song for the time. I would imagine in todays times, that song would "trigger" a few into a frenzy. And Franky would'nt get to go to Hollywood.a reply to: Lagomorphe
