Natural process, the glacier got too big, probably had an old crack that weakened this which may have frozen over again in the past but remained a weak spot, has ocean tides and current's acting mechanically upon it so it eventually broke away.

The size of it is huge and it will have a cooling effect as it drifts northward, eventually it shall melt but that may be in excess of 10 month's, it may actually last up to several years or indeed even a decade depending on how far north it drift's and how fast but it will remain a hazard to shipping especially if it drifts into the shipping lane's, given it's sheer size destroying it with explosives is not feasible and would merely compound the danger to shipping.

But climatically it has the potential to cool the southern hemisphere for quite a while given it's sheer size, cooling the water and the air, this can of course reduce precipitation but it may go both way's, less rain in some areas and more in other's due to this short term cooling effect.

No alien's, there probably are some in politic's and ticketing cars for illegal parking but not in this case, then again it would be a great distraction from other activity's in Antarctica wouldn't it.

If i am reading this correctly, the OP isn't claiming anything other than they found it interesting so thought they would share. In point of fact, the OP is firmly giving the impression that they DON'T believe it, just that it is interesting.

It could easily be argued we were flattened or at least squished a bit as we are an oblate spheroid rather than a sphere - meaning we are like a ball that has/is been/being squashed.

The Earth is melting. Being converted into a more usable nutrient form, for uptake into the galactic root system.
