It's actually not hard for a child to escape. They only have to be quiet while in the area of the parents' room, after that, it's showtime. My
little brother (who is now 32) was bad with sleepwalking. He'd be sound asleep and go right out the door into the neighborhood. We put a chain on
and he got that off and left anyway. We finally had to install a lock that locked with a key from the inside. Even being asleep, he would pull a
dining room chair over to the door, get on it and be out. The final time he was successful, he was found at the dead end where the woods began by a
neighbor. Scared us to death. She said he was standing there with no expression, just total slack-faced look. It was as if his programming had run
out or something. As she went to him (he ignored her calls), he laid down right in the street, curled up and started "normal" sleep again. If he
can do all of that asleep at 5, then I'm not surprised at anything an awake and fully functional 4 year old can do!
Lucky for everyone that nobody was hurt.
