Flemish politicians have claimed that Belgian fisherman have “eternal rights” to fish in British waters, even after Brexit, thanks to a 1666 Royal decree.

The ancient charter, issued by King Charles II, could make a mockery of Britain’s efforts to take back control of its seas . . .

Sounds a bit desperate, digging up an ancient charter. What next?

There doesn't seem to be any other reference to this yet. If anyone can find anything, please post.

I wonder if these "eternal rights" will continue when there are no fish left to catch.

The Act of Union was agreed and signed in 1707. Before that date Scotland was an independent country.

Any agreement Charles II signed in 1666 would not have included Scotland waters.

Surely this is not a way for Brussels to retain control? If this is the best they can come up with then I think we'll all be OK.

The fisheries question is going to be really complex for Europe as the British waters have kept many European fleets alive (at the cost to UK fleets). The travesty of over fishing and EU silliness must not be repeated. The sooner the UK are able to take control of their fisheries and agriculture the better. Both are areas of incredible mismanagement by the Flemish (er) the Eurocrats in Brussels.

Which is exactly why I voted out. It was nothing to do with immigration although that is a potential problem. I just want us to take control of our industries again.

Europe has absolutely raped our waters and although my post above was tongue in cheek, I wouldn't be against the Royal Navy protecting our waters with force if necessary.

The flaw in digging up ancient documents is that the document has probably been superseded at some point in the interval. Was this right being accepted just before Britain entered the Common Market? If not, it must have ceased to be applicable a long time ago.

If memory serves, there are agreements from the time of Elizabeth ! giving the English monarch the right to garrison Flemish sea-ports. Are those agreements to be accepted as well?

If their descendants claim this right I think they should be fishing from sailing boats with nets made from handspun yarn.

The Falmouth oyster dredgers are restricted to traditional methods as a means of controlling the amount harvested.

www.falmouth.co.uk...

Governed by ancient laws that were put in place to protect the natural ecology of the riverbeds and oyster stocks, oystermen fishing in the Port of Truro Oyster Fishery are prohibited from using engines. Instead, sail power and hand-pulled dredges must be used. This is the only oyster fishery in Europe, if not the world, where such traditional methods must be used.

It seems to be a workable solution.

Doesn't matter even if true. Parliament cannot be bound by earlier laws so this could be repealed quite easily.

The only entrenched rule in English law is that you cannot entrench rules in English Law - a rather wonderfully Ouroboros-esque little touch that I do so enjoy.

And who is going to stop poaching, the Tory's under Cameron have already stripped our navy to the bone then scooped out it's marrow so?.

Also it goes both way's, we stop them and they stop us, then there will be fight's between the trawlers based on there flag, our scallop's will still be poached by the EU, back room deal's will be struck (the real reason for pulling out) between the UK (Tory's) and individual member states of the EU, Many of our fisheries with now very few home grown trawlers will see a drop off in there available supply as block's to the foreign trawlers come into effect.

I want to see control of our coast and resources back BUT not the way this idiot government of self serving hooray harry's is going about it they barely have a brain cell between the lot o'em and they seem incapable of even using that correctly for the sake of our country.

Remember the old day's, the Trawlers could call in the British Navy in disputes with Portuguese, French and Spanish fishermen but who can then they call in now, all this mean's is the Spanish, French and Portuguese (and other's) shall simply fish the waters illegally and very little if anything at all will be done about it, and I guarantee you there navy's will back up there trawlers.

As soon as those 50 fishermen step forward from 1666 they can settle the matter.

Bourgeois by name bourgeois by nature...

Having read the link there is a clearly been a mix up on the interpretation front.

The document actually says, words to the effect of, "50 Brugge fishermen will be maintained in British waters for eternity" , ie. held hostage.

I think this may have had something to do with the Great Fire of London, which as you will all recall started in an oven while baking buns.

Well, they should also claim fishing rights over the seas of Norther EU countries, such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway and The Netherlands whose royal families are busy running Pedophile rings, drug trafficking and weapons, organs and slave trading in the Balkans, helping Albanian mafia in their main "economic activity"
