The day was slowly changing into night and the storm had become spectacular. With winds over the speed of two hundred and fifty miles it was indeed
one for the memories. Nothing could withstand this kind of power, and sadly there was nothing else left in its way. The once beautiful planet was dead
on the surface now, where green and blue used to be was reduced to a red mess, sand and some reminders of a small mountain, as far as the eye could
see. There was no atmosphere anymore and all water disappeared. Humans, the ones who survived were forced to live underground with limited supplies
and no natural sunshine over nineteen years. Their technology allowed them to contact each other via radios, and later the internet had been restored
globally. They could still access the surface but only in protective gear.
They knew this will happen eventually. Mankind was warned by scientist for many times and world governments made sure these underground facilities
were done in time all over the planet. Unfortunately they did miscalculate the date of the event by several years and because of that they didn’t
have enough supplies for everyone, only for the selected few hundred thousand and only for roughly twenty years. Within those people were the best
physicists, biologists, and with scientists from all the space agencies, they were working together shoulder to shoulder to get ready for the very
last space rocket lunch from this planet.
Danny was one of them. He was a biologist and working on this project he was responsible for collecting and selecting the DNA of as many kind of
flowers as he could. They had DNA stored for every living thing, but because of the limited load the rocket could carry, they needed to make
selections about what stays and what goes. He was currently working on a beautiful flower, a Chrysanthemum quietly taking a sample. He already made
his decision about adding this type of flower to the payload. His decision was based on personal memories as he remembered the times before the
event.
He grew up on an island away from the busy life in the middle of nothing. Their house looked like a castle from hundreds of years ago, with its own
tower that always had him fascinated as a kid. The two hectare of greens front of the castle was his playground in the summer and the huge house and
tower, with its many magical rooms, in the winter. His father was a famous chemist, old school who worked at home and out of his old cabinet where he
kept all the chemicals and ingredients. He watched his father many times working in silence creating something new, something very expensive only the
richest could afford.
His love for Chrysanthemum came from his Mom. She had a huge garden in the back, growing and nursing all kind of flowers. It was his Mom’s
favourite so it became his as well. He was smiling as he thought of these memories even though he knew he will die soon with the rest of mankind.
Everyone knew that. But as a miracle everybody got together for one last task. To lunch this rocket they called “HOPE”, towards the closest planet
with all the different DNAs they could fit in it and hope that it will land perfectly and evolution would do the rest. Hopefully once again humankind
will rise. That planet next to his was ready for life now with breathable air, fresh and salty water; still a bit hot but definitely ready to
evolve.
He smiled again but this time it was a bittersweet one. He loved his planet loved his life on it even though it was dead now. Life on Mars just ended
nineteen years ago and Life on Earth was about to begin.
