Former Venezuelan National Guard General Felipe Rodriguez has been arrested at an apartment in Caracas. Rodriguez and two lieutenants, Jose Antonio Colina and German Varela, have been charged with the bombings of the Spanish and Colombian Embassies in Venezuela, in February 2003. Officials charge the bombings were intended to destabilize Chavez's government. Colina and Varela are currently in the US claiming asylum.

Rodriguez was among top military officers who rose up against Chavez in a short-lived 2002 coup. He later helped lead demonstrations in a plaza in Caracas along with other military commanders opposed to Chavez's leftist government.

Prosecutors have charged Rodriguez, along with former lieutenants, Jose Antonio Colina and German Varela, of carrying out the attacks on the Spanish and Colombian diplomatic missions in February 2003, which injured four people. They face charges of placing explosives, damage to property and causing personal injuries.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Rodriguez first became known to the world in 2002 when he emerged as one of the main leaders in the coup to overthrow Chavez's government. Until recently, he had been living in Miami, and had given an interview to the Miami Herald saying he was working on forming clandestine groups to overthrow Chavez. With all the current talk of Venezuela on these boards, I start to wonder if perhaps there might be some CIA involvement in his resurfacing in Venezuela.

This is extremely ironic. In another Venezuelan news thread somebody was complaining that Chavez is supportin FARC in Columbia lol. Not to mention that this theoretically makes America a state sponsor of terror- even against the embassy of a fellow NATO member!

While we're talking about Venezuela, I'd just like to mention that I started talking about problems in South America last August when Porter Goss was announced as the next head of the CIA, and I got very specific about problems with Venezuela when the court packing and the mercinary advertisement stories came out in December.
The Vagabond warned you.

Claiming asylum?

Does the insanity never end?

What happened to rooting out terrorism?

Venezuelans have got to really have a hard time not bonking every American in the country.

America helped a Panamanian assassin and now some Venezuelan ones-!

Is America crazy or what?

well the US has a long history of sponsoring terrorism, i don't think its going to stop now as I suppose it's a good way of protecting US interests except when it backfires.

Typical of a dictator, expect more moves like this one as Chavez roots out any opposition.... Expect executions as fidel castro did for those who opposed him....

i really feel sad for the Venezuelans who have no idea what is in store for them....

It suggests in the articles perhaps Chavez supporters did this as an excuse to arrest Rodriguez and no doubt crack down on other dissidents. It's amazing how quick people leap to accuse the U.S. for causing 9/11 for alterior motives but accept the word of a communist dictator.

Yep, I hear you djohnsto77.

But you see...it is the trend these days....

You know, when I heard that Norway selected fidel castro for the Nobel Prize, I didn't know whether to cry or laugh my butt off... i was shocked that a free nation would proclaim a dictator as if he was some sort of savior....

It is a trend these days for many countries, and celebrities, in the world to praise dictators...and accuse nations such as the US of the worse acts....

Surely, if a military officer takes part in a coup to remove an elected leader, he is committing an offence and SHOULD be arrested.

Would a US General, guilty of plotting the forced overthrow of GWB, be given a slap on the wrist and told not to be a naughty boy? Sheesh!!!

Doesn't a leader have the right to lock up those who attempt to remove him by violent and unconstitutional means?

Britguy, where is the proof that this general did what Chavez claims?.... and why would this general attack the embassy of Spain?.....

If he was part of a plot against Chavez, he and the rest of the plotters, would have attacked Chavez directly....what does he win by attacking a Spanish embassy?....

If you want to take out a dictator, you attack that dictator, not just two embassies...

Why should he have to provide us all with "proof" to justify what he does within his own borders?
Hell, the US has invaded other nations without providing a shred of evidence to support their assertions of wrongdoing by it's leader

Why wouldn't a subversive element attack the Embassy of Spain, if the attack was supposed to point the finger of guilt elsewhere?

You are asking that Chavez show us proof of what this general did but seem to jump to the conclusion that the guy is innocent based on biased views towards Chavez.

Regardless of what you think of the situation, the fact is he would have not been arrested if he had not returned to Venezuela. Why did he go back, if not to pick up where he left off? He has been involved in attacks against the government, and has given interviews to the Miami Herald stating he intends to back more groups to overthrow the government. What was Chavez supposed to do, throw him a parade?

This is a bit of a double standard, it seems.

Yes US has a history of defending bad governments, well I praise Chavez and we still has not seen anything wrong with him but the allegations of our administration against him.

My father loves Venezuela he always visit the country every other year since the seventies, and yes he has seen the country under less than favored leaders and he said Chavez is good for the people.

So i guess Chavez claiming that militancy is needed on occasion more so agaisnt non-violent people than against violent people, is all good and well?...

So, i guess Chavez saying that he wants to have Venezuela just like Cuba is not telling you that he is not going to be doing good things for the people of that country?...

Is Cuba a good country?.... Aren't Cubans risking certain death by trying to leave the country in "balsas" or makeshift boats?....

Do you know how many times my family and I had to convince members of my family in Cuba, including my two sisters, not to get in one of those boats because most Cubans don't make it here?.....

Most people in Cuba will only talk about politics with those they trust, because the opposition in Cuba, even though it is a peaceful opposition, finds itself without a job, and in jail as soon as someone speaks up their minds about the dictator....

And you think that when Chavez claims he wants Venezuela to be like Cuba is going to be a good thing?....

muaddib you should go back to Cuba as a good Cuban exile and reclaim your country back with your fellow Cuban that still suffer in the country and stop making plans in the name of bush lies to fix other countries that are no yours while you country man, women and children suffer.

Now the target is Chavez well just because bush say so you agree with him.

You are quite the politician when it comes to bushy regime of lies, if you like war so much go for it they need a few good men help to liberated cuba from Castro.

To die without accomplishing anything at all Marg?....that would be something communists would like very much Marg...to have their opposition silenced, even though all the evidence points to the fact that communist regimes and dictators such as Chavez and fidel have never really done good to their countries....

Bush's lies Marg?.... CHAVEZ is the one saying "he wants to be like fidel castro, and have Venezuela in the image of Cuba "....not Bush...

Perhaps you should go live in Cuba or other communist regimes and see how good life is in those countries Marg...

Bush's lies?....

You are the one lying here Marg, and you are the one backing a dictator...whether by your ignorance of the facts, or by full knowledge of what is going on and going along with it...

These men have been charged with the bombings of the Spanish and Colombian Embassies in Venezuela, in February 2003 and are under arrest.

No doubt you thought Tim McVeigh was a nice American for bombing in Oklahoma, and he should not have been arrested.

Too bad Tim McVeigh didn't get to a country that would give him house in a city like Miami!

It was Rodriguez's own fault he got arrested.

He was the one who left his home in Miami, and traveled to Caracas. He gave interviews saying he was organizing another rebellion. He has been charged with the bombing of two embassies. Last May, there was a raid on a farm where a group was preparing for another coup d'etat; and Rodriquez was bringing back-up this time:

According to the Vice-president, rebel military General Felipe Rodriguez, nicknamed "the Crow", is also a suspect in the case. Intelligence reports say that General Rodriguez met recently with Colombian paramilitary leaders.

This man was not going to Venzuela for a vacation, he was going there to cause death and destruction. I think, under those circumstances, there is not a single other government in the world that wouldn't have done the same thing.

Muaddib does the term 'rabid' have any meaning to you?

You are claiming Marge is lying? Marge couldn't lie if she tried. What's with this anti-Castro rant anyway? You anti-Castro?

Chavez is the leader of Venezuela- get it? The leader. He is trying to cut deals with the Chinese and others to escape the American boot. Is that such a terrible thing?

You ranted in another thread about people not reading links- I know you didn't read the link I provided about Panamanian assassins because it CLEARLY lays support of terrorism at Geo.W. Bush's door!

Or maybe it's O.K. to KILL people the U.S. doesn't agree with? Say Castro for example? What is it? Is it death by disagreement?
