well us Brits keep lots of records, but I don't think many of them are freely available due to the data protection act!
The electoral register is soon to be made publically assessible (someone correct me if i'm wrong), but you can choose to opt out of it and become the
electoral equivalent of ex-directory. I will do that because the list will just get sold to marketing companies and they will spam me to death.
At work I do get to look at lots of records, as I'm employed by the Inland Revenue to trace tax payers who have moved house and not told us. We get
to use a program called Quick Address which is compiled from the electoral register - and about 2 years out of date
Also get to see limited
sections of benefits agency files and equifax (credit checks) records.
As a private individual I have to pay to see my own equifax file, I can only see my medical records back to about 1991 and lord only knows where the
school records ended up!
