Less likely or not, it IS the case here that Sasha is short for (or Informal for) Natasha.
Besides, I don't see that any more unlikely that Ted is short for Theodore (and short fit Edward) or Hank instead of Henry, Dick for Richard, Chuck for Charles, or Jack being a less formal version of John.
