Ugh. Saw Soundgarden & NIN in 2014 during the tour to mark the 20th anniversay of TDS & Superunknown. I'd always liked Soundgarden and Chris Cornell
elsewhere (Audioslave, Temple of the Dog) — but I gained a whole new appreciation sometime around dusk.
They'd knocked out a number of the more popular singles in their set list by the time the darkness descended and the clouds of smoke began to rise
over the crowd. And seemingly right on cue, there was a transition. I'd always thought of Soundgarden as spanning a few genres — grunge, metal, a
little post grunge pop — but as the Js burned down to ash and pupils dialated in the waning sunlight, the reverb on Cornell's vocals kicked up many
many notches and the band launched into pure stoner rock.
And it was amazing. Chris Cornell's vocals were something truly special.
I wasn't expecting it beforehand (TBH, we were really there more to see NIN for the 5th or 6th time) but it turned out to be one of my fondest concert
experiences.
RIP Chris Cornell, you badass.
