Personal and for reasons :
Mass Effect 1 and Saren. At the start of this battle I got the well known overheated weapons bug. Managed to get off 5 shots total with 3 different weapons. None would cool down. Resorted to grenades and used every one I had. Then it turned to dodge , hide , counter completely hand-to hand (at least for my part) . At first I was so upset and frustrated I started to just quit the game. Then I realized what an Epic Battle I was in. Going at the scourge of the Universe with fists and powers . 1 1/2 hours after the start Saren fell .
Most excellent ending of a game I have ever experienced . (and I have completed over 300 in my life)
All due to a bug in a game

Have you fought Sephiroth in either of the two major Kingdom Hearts games? Those are some epic fights. Also Ruby Weapon in FF7 is an exercise in craziness.

@thread: I'm going to add the entire Mount Hyjal raid in WoW: Burning Crusade. It was just wave after wave of monsters followed by a boss. Rinse and repeat like 6 times. There was barely any time to heal or mana up and you had to have a continuing strategy so you weren't overrun. And this strategy had to be coordinated between 25 people.

I was going to mention this fight as well, but for completely different reasons. I couldn't remember the name Saren; thanks for that

My experience with Saren was as follows. I'd been playing Mass Effect over the course of several days when I was off work, so I'd been playing like 8 hours a day, lol. Anyway, I knew I was getting near the end of the game, but as it was my first playthrough, I had no idea exactly how close I was. Anyway, I don't recall the exact details that triggered it, but suddenly I found myself unexpectedly up against Saren without any warning whatsoever. And... I hadn't saved my game in like 3 hours. Oops... Well, let me say, THAT put some additional pressure on things... :p

Anyway, so I'm pulling out all the stops, playing really defensively, because I know that if I die, like half the day was wasted. One of Saren's missiles hits me, and like 90% of my life is lost in one hit. Oh, well, that's just great... run around, slowly heal up, then go at it again. And again. And again... I'm keeping myself alive, but he does so much damage and I'm so scared of losing all my progress, that my attack windows are like 0.00001 seconds long, and he's got ridiculous armour and shields or whatever, and after about 45 minutes of this, I'm still going, but I've done essentially nothing to Saren, either. I try swapping gear around trying to find something that works during all of this, but nothing seems to put a dent in him. Then, I remember... somewhere I've got these shield piercing bullets that I've never used because 99% of the enemies are just pushovers, and I don't like wasting stuff like that :p So, I'm thinking, he's got a buttload of shields, and this is the boss fight, so I have literally nothing to lose. In go the shield piercing bullets; I almost die in the process, but manage to keep myself going. I follow the same strategy... except now I'm actually doing damage to Saren faster than he's healing!

Long story short, I eventually managed to kill Saren with the shield piercing bullets, after something like an hour of incredibly stressed battle, brought on because I was too stupid to save my game often enough. But holy crap, that idiotic mistake ended up producing one of the best video game experiences I've ever had, and certainly the longest boss battle I think I've ever had.

For the record, even though nobody starred my post, my boss is the most deadly. My boss can take your car, house, kids and possibly your self esteem for a couple years. This is no joke. All your bosses make you feel like a boss, mine could possible make you feel like a king than a pauper. Just saying'
