Here's some scientists, (math guys really) that have come up with a time machine! Sign me up! Would you go forward or back?

Most likely would go into the past. thinking about it i would go back a few minutes and punch myself in the face for posting this message.

However always would like to travel to different times and just watch and see what was really going on.

Your title is very misleading. The title on the article is "Using math to investigate possibility of time travel".

No real time machine just hope.

Mathematics is a representation of reality. Mathematics is NOT the reality is represents. The majority of mathematics has no correlation to reality.

I would go back, I would love to see the Earth 150,000 years ago before we humans screwed it up.

Sending messages back to th epast in numerical form might be possible then.

I heard that if time travel was possible, we would only be able to go back in time as far back as the time machine was created.

But after actually reading the article I see the mathematicians has thought of that paradox and seems to think the space - time "bubble" carries back in time as well.

I guess Maxwell's Equations have no practical use. They weren't used for decades until magnetic coils, antennae, microphones and loudspeakers were developed. Then telegraph, radio and television became possible.

en.wikipedia.org...

Those equations predict that time slows down close to the speed of liight and close to a massive gravitational object. By the same logic, it's possible for time to run backwards given the right conditions (like being in a closed sphere of space-time).

We could go visit the future with Time Dilation - Accelerate at a high speed fraction of light for several years and turn back around, or a constant 1G.

Backwards time travel? No, I do not think so.

Depending on what theory of time travel and physics you subscribe to, in mine I believe if you could travel back to a point in time and attempt to alter and come back to your present you would branch off into another time line and the one you left from continues back as normal.

However I do not like thinking of time travel, there are so many possibilities you start going insane thinking of them all.

I feel you run into a paradox when thinking of time travel. IMO, very crudely put. If it isn't here now, then it wouldn't be there in the future and the opposite would also apply. If it were in the future, it would be here now. But I guess that depends on how you perceive time. If you were to time travel, does time loop or when you change something, would it branch out to another version of the timeline in a parallel manor and the original still exist. Become advanced enough and travel to a black-hole, sit in front of it for a couple months and take advantage of the intensive gravitational pull in order to slow time compared to Earth's. Not really time travel, but the theory sounds interesting and if it actually works, You would be younger than anyone the same age as you on Earth. If they were even still alive! Honestly, time is nothing without our perception of it. If we didn't measure it, would it be anything? The whole concept makes me think of interstellar, butterfly effect, and project almanac. With that being said, what if it had been created and deemed more destructive then good so they went back and never made it! All rambles brought to you by me, myself and I. With that being said, I'm no one special with massive knowledge. So who am i to know? I definitely like making guesses and assumptions though! You guys always get my mind moving when I read these articles, just not always for the best!

It's funny to me. The T.A.R.D.I.S. was the name of the time machine in the British TV show Dr. Who! It traveled in a circle as well. So I guess there is an equation for TARDIS. Kind of like the tech in Star Trek is a lot closer or has happened already....

Special Relativity (one of Einstein’s 1905 theories) deals with faster-moving objects. The faster an object moves, the more necessary it is to use this theory in order to be accurate.

• As an object moves faster, its mass increases. (Note: this is true if “faster” is measured relative to an observer who is also the one measuring the mass. If the person measuring the mass is moving right along with the object, s/he will not observe any change in mass.) As an object approaches the speed of light, its mass approaches infinity (see diagram).

• Because masses approach infinity with increasing speed, it is impossible to accelerate a material object to (or past) the speed of light. To do so would require an infinite force.

• Since masses change with speed, a change in kinetic energy must involve both a change in speed and a change in mass. At speeds close to the speed of light, most of this change is in mass.

www2.lbl.gov...

As far as I know if mass encounters the speed of light and of it could make a sound.

That sound would be "splat" which is one way to travel into the past.

Tachyon's move faster than the speed of light but they never slow down.

A tachyon /ˈtæki.ɒn/ or tachyonic particle is a hypothetical particle that always moves faster than light. Most physicists believe that faster-than-light particles cannot exist because they are not consistent with the known laws of physics.[1][2] If such particles did exist, they could be used to build a tachyonic antitelephone and send signals faster than light, which (according to special relativity) would lead to violations of causality.[2]

I'd go back to about 1980 and invest in Microsoft and a few other select companies

Just saying

So if that math dude is suddenly mega rich, you know he transitioned from pure math to a practical device

No thanks. We would probably be blessed with an alternate timeline and the Mandela Effect would kick in. Then we would have to start calling them the Berenstein Bears again. I don't want to go through that again.

From the abstract:
" The spacetime geometry is geodesically incomplete, contains naked singularities, and requires exotic matter."

So it is just another hypothetical exercise. Start with a working time machine configuration and end up with unphysical requirements like exotic matter and co.

The map is NOT the territory??!

* face palm *

Anyway, joking aside, the math works but warping space-time via gravity would be?? Too difficult with our level of tech. [Ooops! Should have read the sub-headline]

Of course we could always just do away with that pesky thing called gravity, the "G" in all the equations. Then that pesky relativity of Herr Einstein goes away. Anybody have a gravity shield?? "Mr. Sulu, warp factor weird"

I just love that that they called it a TARDIS:

a Traversable Acausal Retrograde Domain in Space-time (TARDIS).

Leave it to scientists studying time travel to be Whovians!
