The two articles linked below indicate that the elections recently held in Iraq were not quite as successful as the western media has led us to believe with one prominent ex-leader declaring them "very far from what true elections are"

There are allegations of foreign nationals being shipped in to vote for a particular party as well as people being hired to claim heavy turnout to the attending cameras.

In some areas there are allegations concerning incentives being made to people to vote for a particular party.

Interfax news agency quoted Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, the pioneer of glasnost and perestroika as saying the January 30 elections in Iraq were "very far from what true elections are".

Election officials were seen requesting and in many cases casting votes for a particular candidate by talking many voters into letting them (election officials) help them fill out their voting cards.

United Nations observers are reported to have caught five forgery cases in just five minutes. The national Shia party headed by Ahmad Al-Galby, brought non-Iraqi voters (presumably from Iran), issued them with false Iraqi ID papers and allowed them to vote.

So.....were the elections held in Iraq a genuine attempt to promote democracy? Or were they simply propaganda for the western media to enable President Bush to justify his agenda and the further possible invasion of Iran?

How can we attempt to bring democracy to another country when the western world has a difficult enough time regulating its own elections and most, if not all, western elections have an element of inconsistency about them?
