Read the patent grant on the USPTO site using the number in the iso view in the article. Go to page 17. Read the background of the invention. There are some GEMS of information. Further reading will reveal that they plan on putting TWO freaking diesel engines with torque converters and multiple turbos and intercoolers, all housed in this odd duct and nozzle arrangement. The real gem might be the movable trailing edge surfaces on the wing. If I am reading patent-speak correctly, they want the plane to be able to take off from a relatively small airport, get up to 60,000ft and cruise at ~500kias like a U2, go super far, then land at an equally small airport. They specifically call out the hub and spoke method of airline travel, and they want to make it affordable to open up as many point to point routes as possible, maybe even internationally (obviously can't go where ETOPS can). Fascinating reading.
