Well its not a punishment thats silly. They already have requirements to get a diploma they need so many hours of math science etc. Adding an additional requirement such as this isnt punishment. The argument is simply is it a good idea and well it does have some merit oh and changing requirements is not withholding the diploma.

This is one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard. This discourages some kids from finishing high school at all. Why should they try hard in high school to at least get that degree, if they might not get that diploma?

People have a right to determine their own future. If a person wants to get married and is able to be a stay-at-home-mom (or dad - I know a guy who does that), then they should be able to.

If he wants more people to get employment right out of high school, then manufacturing needs to expand.

There would be more jobs available if he sent all of the illegals back to their own country. There would also be less gang activity, so youth would be more likely to seek employment instead of profiting from drugs and crime.

College isn't for everyone.

College has become much more than it needs to be.

College should be for intensive education into specialized fields, not to make a person 'well rounded' (ie indoctrinated.)

Disagree completely. The historical college education was a liberal arts education. Advanced fields like law school (which used to only take 1 year) or medical school (which took 2) were their own thing. Most fields trained you on the job.

College was never meant to be job training, and it shouldn't be treated like such. You're there to learn, not pay for something your employer should be teaching you.

Trade schools are a great alternative for those who are not a fit for college. Unfortunately, trade schools are becoming rare. The US needs to bring back more trade schools that prepare young people to earn a living. College is not for everyone.

We need plumbers, electricians, woodworkers, construction, etc.

Of course - we also need to fix the economy so that more trade skills such as iron workers, machinists, etc., are once again needed.

Trade schools have disappeared because those trades aren't as needed anymore. Why employ an iron worker for two years on a long term job when you can employ a programmer, engineer, and iron worker for 1 month to build a robot that does the job?

While some tradesmen are still needed, we don't need as many anymore.

That said, I should probably state that I disagree with Rahm Emanuel's view here. I think he's just trying to encourage more people to go to college, but making it compulsory for a semester to get your HS Diploma isn't going to make people look at college favorably. The students who learn the most (not necessarily the best grades, but absorb the most knowledge) are those who have a bit of real life experience before attending, and those who want to be there for more reasons than their parents told them to go.
