Has anyone else been getting those Windows Messenger Pop Ups that you can't get rid of?

There always a different message but now there is one that says something like "Tired of these Messenger Pop Ups? Buy ByeByeAds for...$"

Does anyone know how to get rid of them without having to pay for this program, as it's obviously off the same people who are putting the pop ups up.

What's more important here is your PC is open to receiving these types of messages. The fact that youre getting these means youre PC is wide open and vulnerable to all sorts of hacks which exploit the services and ports which allow you to receive those pop-ups.

I would recommend a personal firewall at the very least. And if you have broadband, a cheap broadband router would provide a great layer of protection.

on top of the personal firewall turn off the messenger service completely.

the service is for admins to broadcast a message to all computers on a network. you can shut it off by clicking on start, run, type in msconfig. on the default tab make sure selective startup is checked. then click on the services tab and make sure the messenger service is turned off check apply, then restart, and you wont get those network messages. as far as normal pop-ups are concerned there are a few options, netscape is very good at supressing pop-ups, as well as most firewalls have a feature that will allow you to block pop-ups. Also, make sure you get rid of any spyware. www.lavasoft.com and get the adaware program. Along with that, get spybot, another one good at picking up some things adaware cant. Also, get an anti virus program. hope that helps

Turn off the Windows Messenger option and scan your computer for spyware. Try using Adaware its the best. You can download Adaware here:

Basically, a firewall, working closely with a router program, examines each network packet to determine whether to forward it toward its destination. A firewall also includes or works with a proxy server that makes network requests on behalf of workstation users. A firewall is often installed in a specially designated computer separate from the rest of the network so that no incoming request can get directly at private network resources.

it covers your a$$! basically. closes unecessary ports that would allow intruders. and a lot more. I have a router that has basic firewall functions built in, plus I'm running Shorewall firewall with IPtables on Linux (software firwall). If you have a "always on" connection I would recommend getting one most definitely. You can try www.zonealarm.com and download a free version. It's the most user friendly I#ve seen

Panicware.

I used to get those constantly, it stopped though, then started up.

This morning my mom saw one and chased me around the house with a broom. Not too good.

Here's another problem though, I once got a Pop Up Blocker but after a few weeks of using it I couldn't use my Quicktime for apple trailers anymore.

I have since disabled the Pop Up program but I still can't watch trailers on Quicktime. When you normally watch one your box goes white and then the timer bar appears underneath it and you wait for it to load.
With me the box just goes white and it stays like that.

I have tried re-downloading Quicktime about 20 times and it is definately nothing to do with the actual program I've got.

Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Easy to disable if you have an NT/2000/XP box.

I know exactly the ones you are on about, and they had been pissing me off for ages...

To get rid of them, any pop-up stopper or firewall program WILL NOT stop them, as they are a feature built into Windows.

In order to stop them, click your Start button and then click Run. Type in "services.msc /s". When the Services window opens, scroll down to Messenger and right-click to Properties.

From here, you must FIRST change the Startup Type to Disabled and click Apply. Then, you must click Stop so that you see "Service Status: Stopped". Click Apply again and thats it!

This will stop those damn messages from appearing.

Huuum....I'm using POP UP STOPPER, and also AD-AWARE 6.0 who has an option ( AD-WATCH 3.0 ). But becarefull, AD-WATCH 3.0 will not allow you to browse ATS, so just disable it when you come to ATS ( and don't forget to re-activate it when you leave ATS
).

Also, I disabled some options ( cookies, java, scripts... ) in my I.E settings. Since these modification will not permit you to browse ATS ( at least using the smileys ), just put ATS in your " trusted sites ". And check your cookies setting. You'll have to allow ATS to use the cookies, otherwise, no access to ATS.

I can recommand you another little software :SPYWARE BLASTER 2.53 It will vaccinate your computer from many internet crap.

For the firewall, use the sygate firewall.
It's incredible what this firewall can do.
