Another thing that bugs me is when someone will post something and then if no one replies they reply to it asking why no one is interested!
It's usually because it's been done to death....but then, I have a lot of little idiosyncrasies

Well...I agree and disagree on that.....Quite often, however, there is a new idea that gets thrown out there, but so many people on ATS have a selective method of replying to threads that it becomes a task to try and get people to discuss the topic with you....

John Doe only replies to threads in forum topic X...unless it's a thread by Mr Doe's friend....or some people will say - Well - You've covered all there is to discuss on this topic, why should I belabor your fine points? I'd love for someone to show me a topic that doesn't have two sides to it.....

Only after I’ll reply to my initial post with other questions for the reader to consider on the subject will I get replies….I think it’s just b/c it’s short, sweet, and hits the nail on the head as to what it is we need to discuss….Some people simply don’t like reading what you think, they only wanna know what you’re getting at….

Of course, there are those threads out there that just make you scratch your head and say…next…lol

So, when you get those kinds of egos into one place, who then try and discuss their ideas and beliefs....well, ego clashes will happen, it's just our nature...and in many cases, we don't even realize that we're doing it.

I never looked at it quite like that….you have a point Gazrok….

I think for some, it’s more of an issue than for others…

It's kind of like magnets meeting at polar ends....they both have a powerful force, they both perform the same functions on opposite ends of the spectrum, but you can only push them together for so long....

Expressing an opinion is just that. Expressing!
If people feel that the opinion expressed is against their values etc, then let them make a counter expression so to speak.

As for apologizing at the start of a thread, seems daft to me.
It doesn't matter if they apologize or not. If the thread needs discussion or other opinions then so be it.

That the surely the reason for most of the post's here?

Instead of ad hom attacks on peoples ideas and beliefs how about actually adressing points made in the thread?

That would be a sign of maturity, that some members can display.

The problem seems well identified. What are the best solutions, without taxing the time and patience of moderators?

I believe that attacks seem to be on the rise but to me it dosen't really matter. I try and do a little "research" before I post anything as fact and if I can't find any evidence to back up my claims then the topic is fair game. If you can back up why you think I'm wrong though, then great, I stand corrected and have learned something new. You can act like an ass while you are doing it but it's not really going to bother me as it takes alot to get me rattled. Plus, if you are derogatory, your response, even if correct, will lose credibility, in most eyes, due to your delivery. Just ignore trolls or better yet respond calmly and kill them with kindeness. "Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you", "but hey man, cool avatar"! Most flame wars will die when you throw em a curve ball
