This is quite a rare phenomenon, and this guy Jeff got some great shots..

These images i am bringing you Tonight are of a very illusive gigantic jet or otherwise known as Ionospheric lightning, This is short-lived electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning and storm clouds.
Upper-atmospheric lightning is believed to be electrically induced forms of luminous plasma.
Gigantic jets have only been captured on camera a handful of times and this night i was lucky enough to see 6 jets, some of which you will see below!

This was a mind blowing experience to see with my eyes never mind researching the photos to find out just how rare they are!
I captured these jets near a small town in the Pilbara of Western Australia on the night of Tuesday the 28th of March
I hope you enjoy these photos

I've gotten permission to post up this photo, there's more on his Facebook page..

Is this the same phenomenon which has been known for some time as a "sprite"?

In any case, that is a STUNNING image.

These Jets didn't exist till a few years ago. People saw them for eons, but evidently they are not real unless someone with credentials sees them and says what they are. Now since they are real we can discuss them without being ridiculed by science.

By the way, they are not rare, seeing nice ones like this is rare though. Getting good pictures of them is very rare.

Interestingly they have been on record at least since 94

Sprites and Jets are two different types of the phenomena.

The photo in my OP looks as though maybe there is both jets and sprites.

After seeing this thread, it occurred to me that the famous Space Shuttle video of a laser attempting to zap a departing UFO, could have been a "jet" shooting out into space.

From looking at the graphic provided by sea worthy, it seems as if your "blue jet" may have the bottom end of some "tendrils" at the top of it. Sprites appear higher in the atmosphere, again, according to the graphic. Fascinating stuff either way!

They're strange, but very beautiful.

Like me, really.

Ahem.

It would not have been shooting out into space.

The graphic shows that the blue jet phenomenon, when it occurs, tops out at just below 50km, which is just breaching the stratosphere. Space begins at between 80.4 and 100km from the ground, depending on whether you take a US centric view, or a globally recognised one. Oddly enough however, the edge of the atmosphere is actually much higher up than that, which begs the question of why we do not recognise the edge of the atmosphere as being space instead. But no matter which way you look at the thing, the jet cannot have reached space from its point of issue.

Yeah I don't know enough about them to say definitively.

Definitely fascinating!
